Man, woman arrested after West Broadway robbery

12:00 PM

Winnipeg police have two suspects in custody after a 19-year-old man was assaulted and robbed in the West Broadway neighbourhood Tuesday night.

The victim was walking on the 0-99 block of Furby Street, between Cornish and Wolseley avenues, around 6 p.m. when two people approached him and asked for a cigarette. The victim was thrown to the ground and assaulted before his cellphone was stolen, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Wednesday.

Police scoured the area for surveillance footage, which provided a detailed description of the suspects and led to their location. Officers arrested a man and woman at a home on the same block of Furby Street just before 7:30 p.m., WPS said.

Police have charged a 23-year-old woman and 25-year-old man with robbery.

The victim sustained minor injuries during the robbery. Police recovered his stolen phone.

Pillsbury pizza pops linked to E. coli outbreak

11:49 AM

The Public Health Agency of Canada is warning the public after 23 people, including two Manitobans, were infected with E. coli due to an ongoing outbreak linked to Pillsbury brand pizza pops.

People who ate the frozen pizza snacks became sick between early October and late November, and public health has issued a recall on certain types of the product. Of the cases reported, five people have been hospitalized, the government said in a notice Wednesday.

The recall applies to the following products:

  • pepperoni and bacon pizza pops (30 pizza snacks)
  • pepperoni and bacon pizza pops (eight pizza snacks)
  • supremo extreme pepperoni and bacon pizza pops (30 pizza snacks)
  • Frank’s RedHot pepperoni and bacon pizza pops (four pizza snacks)

The public is advised to check to see whether they have the recalled products in their home. People should throw out or return recalled products to their place of purchase, and clean all surfaces and storage areas with which the snacks may have come in contact with.

Anybody with symptoms of E. coli should contact their health-care provider, the notice said.

Most people who become ill from an E. coli recover within a few days without treatment, with symptoms ranging from nausea and vomiting, to headache, fever, diarrhea and stomach cramps. Some infections can cause severe illness. Pregnant women, children younger than five or adults older than 60, and people with weakened immune systems are at heightened risk.

Residential parking ban lifted

11:15 AM

The city has lifted the residential parking ban put in place as residential streets were plowed.

The annual winter route parking ban, which bars parking on certain streets daily from 2 to 7 a.m., is now back in place.

The city said residents can report streets that were missed by plowing crews by calling 311.

Officials have advised residents to watch out for temporary no parking signs, as anyone parked in violation can be ticketed and towed.
