Jets lose seventh straight

Another day, another one-goal loss for the Winnipeg Jets.

Despite a late push, the Jets were unable to overcome a sluggish first period and fell 2-1 to the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday night at Little Caesars Arena, closing out 2025 on a seven-game losing skid (0-4-3).

Six of those seven defeats were one-goal losses, the lone exception coming on Monday when the Jets lost 3-1 to the Edmonton Oilers after a late empty-net goal from Zach Hyman.

The Jets drop to 15-19-4 for the season and they’ll continue a three-game road trip on Thursday against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Logan Stanley scored the lone goal for the Jets, while former Jets right-winger Mason Appleton delivered the game-winning goal for the RedWings.

Connor Hellebuyck made his eighth consecutive start for the Jets and finished with 17 saves, while John Gibson made 24 for the Red Wings.

Missing Saskatchewan man may be in Flin Flon area: RCMP

RCMP are asking Flin Flon residents to be on the lookout for a missing man from Saskatchewan who was last spotted in the western Manitoba border city.

Moise Sewap, 66, was last seen in Flin Flon getting into a silver Ford Escape with a woman outside of a big box store on Highway 10 sometime between Dec. 15 and Dec. 23 around the noon hour.

He’s 5-9 and about 220 lbs, with brown eyes and brown, short hair. Sewap was wearing a blue-and-black checked jacket when he was spotted outside the store in Flin Flon. He was reported missing Dec. 22 to Creighton RCMP.

Mounties have asked property owners in the area to check out buildings and sheds for Sewap. RCMP say he’s known to travel to the Flin Flon and Creighton areas, but they’re not sure of his current whereabouts.

Man slain on Sioux Valley Dakota Nation

A teenager accused of stabbing two men — one fatally — at a home in Sioux Valley Dakota Nation on Tuesday has been arrested.

Virden RCMP were called to a home in the western Manitoba community just before 5 a.m., where they found two men, 23 and 25, with stab wounds. The suspect had already ran away.

Paramedics rushed the 25-year-old to hospital in serious condition but he died shortly after arriving. The 23-year-old’s wounds aren’t considered life-threatening.

Mounties found their suspect soon after at another home in Sioux Valley with the help of a police dog team and officers from other detachments.

The 16-year-old boy has been charged with second-degree murder.

Chainsaw-wielding man arrested in domestic incident

A man faces multiple charges after police say he threatened Little Grand Rapids First Nation community safety officers while holding a chainsaw.

A woman in the community asked the safety officers to help retrieve items from a home she shared with her partner on Monday.

A man inside the house refused to get the items for officers and stood in the door holding a knife and handsaw, a Wednesday news release said. The man threatened officers and grabbed a chainsaw, which he started, police said.

RCMP were called shortly before 1 a.m. to the scene and were able to get the man to drop the chainsaw.

A 33-year-old man faces charges of assault with a weapon, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, uttering threats and mischief under $5,000.

He was taken into custody and has since been released with a court date.

Man charged with kicking officer

A man faces charges after police say he stole merchandise from a downtown store and kicked an officer in the head while being arrested.

Members of the Winnipeg Police Service foot patrol unit were on duty Tuesday around 6:30 p.m. when they were alerted to someone trying to steal items from a store on the 300 block of Portage Avenue.

A 37-year-old man was arrested and police say he verbally threatened one of the officers, the WPS said in a Wednesday news release.

As the accused was being placed in a cruiser, he kicked one of the officers, police said. The officer did not require medical attention.

The man is charged with assaulting a peace officer, uttering threats and theft under $5,000. He was detained in custody.

Jets’ Morrissey, two Manitobans named to Canada’s men’s Olympic hockey team

Josh Morrissey is getting another opportunity to represent his country.

Only this time, it will be on the grandest stage.

The Winnipeg Jets defenceman was among the 25 players unveiled by Hockey Canada this morning at a press conference in Minnesota as part of the men’s Olympic team that will be in Italy in February.

Morrissey was a stalwart blue-liner for Canada at the 4 Nations Face-Off last February, though he was unable to suit up in the gold medal game due to a nasty flu virus.

The Calgary product is having another outstanding season, chipping in six goals and 30 points in 37 games going into Wednesday’s game against the Detroit Red Wings.

Morrissey is currently tied with Quinn Hughes for sixth among NHL D-men in points and he continues to supply sound defensive play while averaging just under 25 minutes of ice time per game.

There is also some strong Manitoba flavour on this edition of Team Canada as Winnipegger Mark Stone and Elkhorn product Travis Sanheim were named to the team.

Jets centre Mark Scheifele and Winnipegger Seth Jarvis (who helped Canada win gold at the 4 Nations Face-Off) were not among the 14 forwards, though they could remain under consideration as potential injury replacements.

Scheifele is tied for 10th in NHL scoring after scoring 18 goals and accumulating 45 points in 37 games.

Selkirk RCMP looking for missing 37-year-old man

Selkirk RCMP are asking for the public’s help in locating a man who has been missing since Christmas Eve.

Police say they received a report that afternoon about the disappearance of 37-year-old Blair Colles. He was last seen leaving a residence on Manitoba Avenue in Selkirk, approximately 40 kilometres north of Winnipeg.

Colles is described as being 5-11, weighing about 180 pounds, with brown hair and hazel eyes.

RCMP say attempts to locate him have been unsuccessful, and his whereabouts remain unknown. Police add they are concerned for his well-being.
