Jets drop eighth straight

TORONTO – The Winnipeg Jets found a painful new way to lose on Thursday.

A 6-5 heartbreaker to the Toronto Maple Leafs is the club’s eighth straight setback (0-5-3) and 21st in the past 27 games (6-17-4).

Winnipeg grabbed a 4-1 lead before the game was even halfway over, then watched it turn into a 4-4 tie early in the third period. But after Mark Scheifele scored his second of the night to put the visitors back in front, the Jets surrendered two late goals to once again come up empty.

Gabriel Vilardi, Dylan DeMelo and Alex Iafallo had the other goals for the Jets, who are now an NHL-worst 15-20-4 on the season.

Auston Matthews had three goals for the Leafs, while Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Matias Maccelli and Troy Stecher also found the back of the net

Backup goalie Eric Comrie, making his first start in nine games, had a rough night in stopping just 24 of 30 shots he faced.

The Jets return to action on Saturday night in Ottawa.

Power restored in Cross Lake First Nation: Manitoba Hydro

Manitoba Hydro says power has been restored to Cross Lake First Nation after a Sunday outage.

Customers will gradually have their power restored to prevent overloading the system, a New Year’s Day media release says.

It’s anticipated power will be fully restored to the community “sometime this evening if all goes well.”

The broken line was 300 metres long and ran between two islands in the Nelson River. Approximately 20 Manitoba Hydro employees have been working in the community during the outage.
