Shots fired leads to drug, weapons arrests

2:14 PM

Shots fired in a North End neighbourhood led Winnipeg police to multiple arrests and seizures of fentanyl and guns, the police service stated.

Police were called to the 300 block of Manitoba Avenue on Jan. 3 to look into shots being fired outside of a home, the police service stated in a news release Sunday. Officers determined a 38-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman inside the home were having a heated verbal argument that escalated to the man physically assaulting the woman, causing minor injuries. Police said the man then went outside and recklessly fired a gun, striking a neighbouring property.

Officers arrested the man, the woman and five other people. Police came back with a search warrant and seized a handgun, 3.6 ounces of fentanyl worth about $5,400, and 3.9 ounces of methamphetamine worth about $1,300.

Taxi driver alerts police to attempted assault

2:05 PM

A Winnipeg taxi driver alerted police as an armed man tried to assault him, police say.

The Winnipeg Police Service arrested and charged a 48-year-old man in the William Whyte neighbourhood after officers noticed a taxi driver’s emergency strobe lights in the area of Burrows Avenue and Powers Street at about 1:40 a.m. Sunday.

The taxi driver wasn’t hurt.

Police seized a loaded handgun and a prohibited 13-round magazine from the suspect. The 48-year-old man has been detained in custody and is charged with several gun and weapons charges.

Convenience store clerk assaulted

1:58 PM

Two people were arrested after a convenience store clerk was assaulted in Elmwood Saturday night.

Winnipeg police were called to the store in the 400 block of Talbot Avenue at about 7:12 p.m. Jan. 3 for a report of an employee being assaulted with various items from the store following a dispute with two people. The clerk didn’t need medical attention. Police went to the store and watched security video footage. While officers were there, the suspects returned to the store.

The suspects tried to claim they had been assaulted by the employee, the Winnipeg Police Service stated in a news release Sunday.

A 37-year-old man has been charged with assault with a weapon. A 40-year-old woman is facing the same charge.
