Sex offender released from Headingley jail

3:50 PM

A 49-year-old man who has served time for sexual offences against children was released from the Headingley Correctional Centre on Saturday.

James Sheldon Jasper is expected to live in Winnipeg after serving a sentence for failing to comply with conditions of a probation order.

The Winnipeg Police Service sent a news release Saturday on behalf of the Manitoba integrated high-risk sex offender unit, a joint unit composed of WPS and RCMP officers, to alert the public of his release.

Jasper is considered a high risk to reoffend, the release said. He was convicted of a sexual offence against a 10-year-old boy in November 2003 and has repeatedly breached terms of his long-term supervision and probation orders, the release said.

A 37-year-old man has been charged after he was found driving a stolen vehicle that contained a loaded gun, police say.

Officers saw a vehicle speeding northbound on Gateway Road at about 10:40 p.m. Friday. When they stopped the vehicle near Molson Street and Norwich Avenue, the driver ran away and police apprehended him, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Saturday.

A semi-automatic rifle with a loaded magazine was found inside the car.

The man has been charged with various firearm offences, and possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000. He was detained in custody.
