Province warns of three more measles exposure sites

The provincial government notified the public Monday of three more locations in southern Manitoba where people might have been exposed to measles.

The locations are:

• Harvest Christian Fellowship Church in Plum Coulee, from 8:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on Jan. 4
• The emergency department at Boundary Trails Health Centre, located between Winkler and Morden, from 7:50 a.m. to 11:35 a.m. on Jan. 5
• De Salaberry District Health Centre in St-Pierre-Jolys, from 9:05 a.m. to 11:40 a.m. Friday.

Public health officials asked anyone who was in those locations during those times to check their immunization records and ensure they are up to date with measles vaccines.

City boy, 15, charged in sextortion case

Police say a Winnipeg teen posted intimate photos of a girl from Belgium online and then tried to extort her.

The investigation began in the western European country, and the Winnipeg Police Service raided a Point Douglas home Thursday after obtaining a search warrant. Officers seized digital storage devices and arrested a 15-year-old boy. He is charged with five offences: extortion, criminal harassment and three related to child sexual abuse or obscene material.

He was released from custody with “numerous conditions,” the WPS said in a news release Monday.

Police said the boy and the teenage girl, who were strangers, were in contact online for about a year and never met.

“The female was coerced to send intimate images of herself to the accused. He posted the images online without her consent,” the release said.

The boy harassed and extorted the victim, demanding money to stop posting the intimate images online last year, between Oct. 4 and Nov. 30, the WPS said. The victim reported the incident to police in Belgium, who helped get the images removed, the release said.

City police received an online report about the sextortion case in October.

Man smashed windows on four buses: police

A 30-year-old man who had been ordered by a court to stay off Winnipeg Transit property is accused of smashing windows on multiple buses Sunday.

Police say video surveillance captured the man smashing windows on four different buses between 1:36 p.m. and 8:15 p.m., which caused about $3,000 in damage.

The incidents were reported to police and officers arrested the man while he was walking on the 800 block of Main Street at 8:39 p.m., the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Monday.

He has eight convictions for mischief under $5,000 from August 2023 to August 2025.

The man is charged with four counts of mischief under $5,000 and failing to comply with a probation order. He was detained in custody.

Truck used to smash into store, one boy charged

Two boys — one too young to be charged — were arrested after a stolen pickup truck was used to smash through a storefront window in a burglary in Thompson early Monday.

RCMP were contacted about the incident at a Selkirk Avenue vape business at 3:40 a.m.

Security video showed a truck with an Ontario licence plate ramming the store. Two males fled after stealing items.

Officers stopped a truck driving down Mystery Lake Road and stopped it in a lane behind Brandon Crescent.

Two boys, ages 11 and 13, were inside. The younger one can’t be charged under the Youth Criminal Justice Act and was turned over to a family member. The older boy remains in custody, Manitoba RCMP said.

Two charged in Sandy Bay home invasion

Two men have been charged after a victim was assaulted during a home invasion in Sandy Bay First Nation.

The Manitoba First Nations Police Service was called about the incident on Little Ridge Road South at about noon Saturday. The victims told police two men kicked in their door, demanded money, assaulted a man, stole a phone and drove away.

Police arrested two men, ages 31 and 20, at two Sandy Bay homes later that day. They are charged with breaking-and-entering to commit an indictable offence, robbery, assault and uttering threats. The older man was also wanted on three warrants for arrest.

Missing teen last seen leaving school Friday

RCMP are asking for the public’s help in finding a missing teen.

Nevaeh-Lee Michelle-Richard, 16, was last seen leaving school shortly before 4 p.m. Friday and did not return to her home in Gimli. She was reported missing at about 4:30 p.m. that day.

She is described as 5-8 in height, 120 pounds, with braces. She has long black hair with teal streaks in the front and hazel eyes, Manitoba RCMP said in a news release Monday.

The teen might be in the Winnipeg area, the release said.

Police asked anyone with information regarding her whereabouts to call Gimli RCMP at 204-648-5106 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).

Senior killed in Hwy. 11 crash

A Pinawa senior was killed in a collision involving a semi-truck on Highway 11 on Friday.

Police were sent to the crash at the intersection with Minnewawa Street, in the Rural Municipality of Lac du Bonnet, at noon on Friday, Manitoba RCMP said in a news release Monday. 

A vehicle headed west on the street entered the intersection and was hit by a semi-truck travelling north on Highway 11.

The driver of the westbound vehicle, a 78-year-old woman, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the truck, a 41-year-old Fannystelle man, was not hurt, RCMP said.

Man charged with arson after apartment fire

A man has been charged with arson with disregard for human life after a fire broke out in an apartment building Sunday.

Police were sent to the 100 block of Clarke Street shortly after 3:30 p.m. and were told by Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service members that a fire there was being investigated as suspicious in nature.

Police arrested a 52-year-old resident inside the building.

“Through their investigation, officers learned that the suspect had set fire to furniture inside his apartment, which quickly spread, caused significant damage and endangered the lives of other tenants,” the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Monday.

The man was detained in custody.

Suspect arrested after three women randomly assaulted in downtown skywalk

Winnipeg police arrested a man accused of randomly assaulting three women who were walking to work in the downtown skywalk system early last Thursday morning.

At about 6:30 a.m. on Jan. 8, a woman was walking in the Millennium Library skywalk when a man grabbed her and tried to take her backpack, the Winnipeg Police Service said Monday. The woman, who was hurt but didn’t need medical attention, yelled at him and ran off.

Between 6:30 and 6:45 a.m., a man confronted a second woman in the Graham Avenue skywalk, screaming obscenities at her and pushing her against a railing before he ran off.

A short time later, the suspect confronted a third woman in the Graham Avenue skywalk, slapping a coffee cup from her hand as he threatened to stab her, police said. The man picked up the cup, threw it at the woman and pushed her, but he ran off as she defended herself.

Police foot patrol officers identified and found their suspect at about 7:30 a.m., still in the skywalk system, near St. Mary Avenue.

Randy Herman, 40, is charged with two counts of assault and one each of robbery, assault with a weapon and uttering threats. He was held in custody.
