Another measles warning issued for Winkler site

The province notified the public Tuesday about another location where people might have been exposed to measles.

Anyone who was at C.W. Wiebe Medical Centre’s teen clinic in Winkler between 12:15 p.m. and 2:45 p.m. Thursday should watch for symptoms until Jan. 30, the Manitoba government said in a news release.

Public health officials asked anyone who was there during that time to check their immunization records and ensure they are up to date with measles vaccines.

Festival du Voyageur lineup announced

Dozens of local and national musicians are set to take the stage at Festival du Voyageur this year.

The lineup for the annual francophone winter festival — which runs from Feb. 13 to 22 at Whittier Park (836 Rue St. Joseph) and other St. Boniface venues — was announced Tuesday.

Visiting musical headliners include Montreal indie-rock band TOPS, high-energy Vancouver ensemble Five Alarm Funk, rising Saskatoon singer-songwriter Katie Tupper and Toronto party band Dwayne Gretzky. Canada’s Drag Race competitor Velma Jones will perform during the Voyageur Pride Night event on Feb. 20.

Also on the bill are Manitoba artists Les Barn Boys, l’Ensemble folklorique de la Rivière-Rouge, Les G-Strings, Men in Kilts, Ivan Flett Memorial Dancers, Ila Barker and others.

Visitors to Fort Gibraltar will find educational programming, cultural displays, food, drinks and family-friendly outdoor activities.

Stranded fishers rescued on Lake Manitoba

Three stranded fishers were rescued after an Air Force plane spotted them on Lake Manitoba early Saturday.

RCMP were sent out on the lake near Saint Ambroise on Friday after one of the fishers texted a family member asking for help getting home.

Portage la Prairie officers launched a search-and-rescue mission shortly before 8 p.m. after being told the fishers — ranging in age from nine to 60 — had travelled several kilometres onto the frozen lake in an enclosed Bombardier.

Mounties and a family member spent three hours searching the area on snowmobiles. A family member received a second text asking for help during that time.

Police, who used drones during their search, could not find the fishers and contacted the Royal Canadian Air Force, who sent a Hercules plane.

The missing fishers were spotted about five kilometres off the shoreline shortly before 4:30 a.m. Saturday.

Police and a family member drove their snowmobiles to the spot.

The trio did not have firewood and were running low on fuel, Manitoba RCMP said in a news release Tuesday. The three people, who did not need medical attention, were taken to shore.

Semi-truck driver killed in crash southeast of The Pas

A driver was killed when a semi-trailer rolled over southeast of The Pas on Monday afternoon.

RCMP were contacted about the crash on Highway 60, about 40 kilometres east of Highway 10, shortly after 4:30 p.m.

The westbound vehicle went off the road, rolled and came to a stop in a tree line, Manitoba RCMP said in a news release Tuesday.

A 50-year-old Winnipeg man was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

River trail closed because of warming temperatures

The Nestaweya River Trail has closed because of warm temperatures.

The trail opened Dec. 31. All sections of the trail are now closed, and the canopy skating rink is also closed, The Forks states on its website.

The skating rink at the CN Stage and Field remains open.

Four suffer ‘significant’ injuries” in rural school bus rollover

Four people suffered “significant but non-life-threatening injuries” when a school bus rolled over north of Swan River.

RCMP were sent to the crash site on Highway 10, about 13 kilometres south of Mafeking, at 8:35 a.m. Tuesday.

The four patients are being taken to hospital, Manitoba RCMP said in a news release later that morning.

“Multiple other children were being treated for injuries at the scene as well as taken to hospital,” the release said.

“RCMP will update the situation when more information is known.”

Sapotaweyak Cree Nation Chief Nelson Genaille said the bus was transporting students from his community to Swan River when the incident happened. He did not have any information about injuries.

“It was raining yesterday, and it’s black ice right now,” Genaille said of the highway conditions.

Two charged in Lydia Street slaying

A second man has been arrested after a man assaulted last month died from his injuries.

Police were sent to an apartment complex on the 100 block of Lydia Street on Dec. 21 and found the victim inside. Michael Allen Harrington, 42, died from his injuries on Dec. 24.

A 27-year-old man was arrested for aggravated assault the next day. The Winnipeg Police Service identified him Tuesday as Conrad Jesse Fiddler. He was arrested again at the Winnipeg Remand Centre on Monday and charged with manslaughter.

Police arrested a second man on the 100 block of Isabel Street on Thursday. Larry Walter Richard-Hall, 19, is charged with second-degree murder.

The slaying was the 22nd homicide investigation of 2025. An online fundraiser, set up by Harrington’s family to help with expenses before his death, said he had been stabbed.

Police stop nearly 3,000 drivers in checkstops

The Winnipeg Police Service stopped 442 vehicles during the final days of its annual holiday checkstop campaign.

Twenty-nine of the drivers stopped between Dec. 21 and Dec. 31 were under the influence of alcohol or drugs, the WPS said Tuesday. Twelve were charged criminally with an offence related to impaired driving, six were given an immediate roadside prohibition for failing a breathalyzer, and 11 were given a warning based on their blood-alcohol level.

Police previously released partial numbers for that period, from Dec. 21 to Dec. 28.

Officers stopped 2,785 vehicles and identified 102 drivers under the influence of alcohol or cannabis during the holiday program, the WPS said in a news release Tuesday. Fifteen people were charged criminally with alcohol-related impaired driving, while 77 were given immediate roadside prohibitions, and nine failed cannabis tests. Police gave out 146 traffic tickets.

The highest blood-alcohol level registered was more than three times the legal limit. In one incident, an impaired driver was involved in a multi-vehicle collision, the WPS said.
