Man charged in bank robbery

9:56 AM

A 29-year-old man is accused of robbing a bank at Portage and Main on Friday.

Just after 3:30 p.m. Jan. 16, a man walked into a bank in the 200 block of Portage Avenue and handed a written note to a teller demanding money. The note said he had a weapon, the Winnipeg Police Service stated in a news release Sunday. The man was given an undisclosed amount of money and fled.

Police were called, and officers quickly located a suspect on a transit bus. Police made the arrest just before 4 p.m. on a bus that was stopped at Portage Avenue and Colony Street. Police didn’t locate any weapon.

Jonathan Fontaine, 29, has been charged with robbery and was detained in custody.
