Police search for suspect after cab driver robbed, assaulted

Winnipeg police are searching for a suspect after a cab driver was allegedly robbed and assaulted early Thursday.

Police say the driver stopped the cab near the near the 400 block of Charles Street at the passenger’s request. Before exiting, the passenger produced a shotgun, demanded the driver’s property and told him to exit the vehicle.

The driver was then assaulted and robbed, a Saturday media release states.

Police are searching for a male suspect described as Caucasian or Indigenous, approximately 35 years old with a heavy build and possible facial hair on his chin. He was wearing a black jacket, black toque and had a shotgun.

Anyone with information, dash-cam, or other video footage in the area is asked to contact the major crimes unit at 204-986-6219 or submit an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers online or by calling 204-786-8477.

Police investigate Elmwood restaurant robbery

City police are looking for a male suspect after a fast-food restaurant on the 200 block of Henderson Highway was robbed Saturday morning.

The man, armed with an edged weapon, went behind the restaurant’s counter to take the till before fleeing on foot, a Saturday release states. No one was injured during the robbery.

The suspect is described as a Caucasian man, aged 28 to 30, and is 5-5 with a small build. He was wearing a brown jacket with a white stripe down the arms, dark pants and was carrying a dark backpack. Police say the suspect appeared to have his face covered.

Crews extinguish vacant house fire in North End

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service was called to a vacant house fire on the 400 block of Flora Avenue just after 5 a.m. Saturday.

Upon their arrival, firefighters saw smoke coming from the home. The fire was declared under control at 5:41 a.m. No injuries were reported and the fire is being investigated.

The city is asking residents to call 911 if they see someone entering a vacant building, or to contact 311 if a building’s windows or doors have been breached.

Province announces $350K for Dauphin projects

The province is investing $350,000 for four community development projects in Dauphin, Municipal and Norther Relations Minister Glen Simard announced Saturday.

Dauphin Recreation Services, the Ukrainian Folk Arts Centre and Museum, and the Anishinaabe Agowidiiwinan Secretariat will each receive $100,000 of the funds, while Career Trek will receive $50,000. The funds will be used to enhance spaces and develop youth programming.

The funding comes from the Manitoba government’s From the Ground Up — Safe Healthy Communities for All program, which will see more than $12 million used to support over 200 community development initiatives in Manitoba, a media release states.
