Two accused of causing flooding at police HQ

Two people are accused of tampering with water valves and causing flooding at Winnipeg police headquarters on Saturday.
A 51-year-old man and a 36-year-old woman are each facing six counts of mischief over $5,000. They were released on undertakings and their names haven’t been publicly released. They’re accused of opening several emergency water supply valves in the upper stairwells of the tower building at 266 Graham Ave., which adjoins the Winnipeg Police Service headquarters building, after 6 p.m. on Saturday. General patrol officers and cadets searched the area and turned over two suspects to the Major Crimes Unit at about 11 p.m.
Some parts of the HQ were flooded, and there is extensive water damage that hasn’t yet been fully assessed, the Winnipeg Police Service stated in a news release Sunday morning.
Initially, the police service issued a public notification indicating it looked like there had been a water main break or bursting of upper-level pipes. The tampering with valves wasn’t discovered until later, the news release stated.
The water damage means the HQ at 245 Smith St. is closed to in-person reporting. People can continue to report online. Uniform police operations aren’t affected by the disruptions, the police service stated.
