Crews respond to Powers St. duplex fire

No one was hurt in a duplex fire in north Winnipeg Monday.

Reports of a fire came in at 11:32 a.m. Feb. 23 at a two-storey duplex on Powers Street. Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service crews responded and got the fire under control within about half an hour.

All occupants of the building got out safely before crews arrived. No injuries were reported and no damage estimates are available, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service stated in a news release Monday.

The fire is under investigation.

Slippery conditions are expected in the area as water from firefighting efforts freezes.

River East Transcona EAs join CUPE

Educational assistants in Manitoba’s second largest school division have voted to join the the Canadian Union of Public Employees.

CUPE Manitoba announced the imminent addition of 600 new members in a news release on Monday.

Union president Gina McKay said the provincial chapter, now representing about 7,000 education workers, is “thrilled” to welcome support staff from the River East Transcona School Division.

These workers have long been represented by an independent union.

Their current four-year contract, which was negotiated by the River East Transcona Educational Assistants Association, expires on Dec. 31.

CUPE Manitoba indicated details are being finalized at the Manitoba Labour Board following a successful card signing campaign and official vote.

Two face gun, drug charges after traffic stop

A man and woman from Winnipeg are in custody after police found a stolen gun and drugs during a traffic stop.

RCMP pulled over a vehicle for failing to stop at a stop sign in Little Saskatchewan First Nation Saturday at 1:45 p.m.

The male driver appeared to be impaired, a Monday RCMP news release said. When officers confirmed the man had breached court orders, he was arrested.

The female passenger was arrested after drugs were found in the vehicle, RCMP said.

Officers also found a loaded handgun (stolen from Alberta in 2022) and 16 ounces of cocaine.

A 45-year-old man and 28-year-old woman face multiple firearm and drug charges.

Arson charges after suite fire

A 29-year-old woman faces arson charges after a suite was set on fire Sunday.

Winnipeg Police Service officers were sent to a housing complex on the 500 block of Dufferin Avenue at about 7 a.m after a report of a fire.

Officers were told one of the building’s tenants set fire near a couch inside a suite. Police located a 29-year-old woman nearby and arrested her. No injuries were reported.

The woman faces charges of arson with disregard for human life and arson causing damage to property. She was released and will appear in court at a later date.

Two charged with manslaughter, sex assault

Two men have been charged with manslaughter and aggravated sexual assault after a 20 year old man was slain Saturday in Elmwood.

Police were sent to a residence on the 400 block of Keenleyside Street shortly after 5 p.m. as part of a well-being check, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Monday.

Officers found a 20-year-old man seriously injured. He was sent to hospital in critical condition and died of his injuries.

Police identified the victim as Nikolas Bear of Berens River First Nation, who was residing in Winnipeg.

Augustine Owen Bear, 18, was arrested at the scene. A second man, Xaavier Xander Fiddler, 19, was arrested hours later on the 500 block of St. Mary’s Road.

Back-seat fight escalates into stabbings

Two men suffered stab wounds after an argument in the back seat of a moving vehicle escalated, RCMP say.

A 22 year old from Sandy Bay and a 20 year old from the Rural Municipality of Portage la Prairie were travelling in the back seat of an SUV Sunday on Highway 50 near Sandy Bay First Nation when a fight broke out, an RCMP news release Monday stated.

Both men were stabbed before the driver stopped the vehicle and called 911 at 6:20 p.m.

The driver drove the pair to a nearby emergency medical station before they were sent to Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg.

RCMP are investigating.

RCMP searching for missing 25-year-old Thompson woman

The RCMP is asking for the public’s help finding a missing 25-year-old Thompson woman.

Shyanne Dorion was last seen at 7 p.m. Feb. 19 at an address on McGill Place in Thompson, and police received a missing persons report for her around 11 p.m. that night. Police are concerned for her wellbeing, RCMP stated in a news release Monday.

Dorion is described as 5’2” tall, 100 pounds, with black hair & brown eyes. No clothing description has been provided.

Man arrested after verbal altercation leads to machete attack outside Siloam Mission

A 33-year-old is in custody after police say a verbal dispute ended with a machete attack early Monday morning outside of Siloam Mission.

Police say they were called to the 300 block of Stanley Street just after 12:30 a.m. after a report of an assault with a weapon. Responding officers located a 36-year-old victim outside the shelter with serious injuries to his upper body. Officers used multiple tourniquets before the man was taken to hospital in stable condition.

Police say around 12:30 a.m., the suspect and the victim were outside of Siloam when they became involved in a verbal dispute. This escalated to the point where the suspect male brandished a machete that had been concealed in his backpack, striking the victim before fleeing.

The suspect was located and arrested by police a short time later outside a building in the 300 block of Princess Street. He faces multiple charges, including aggravated assault, possession of a weapon and carrying a concealed weapon. He was detained in custody.

Strike action underway in RM of Tache

Strike action is now underway in the Rural Municipality of Tache after operating engineers in the RM walked off the job on Monday morning.

The strike is expected affect several essential services in the RM, including reduced hours at the Lorette and Monominto solid waste management facilities, along with reduced services in Lorette and Landmark, and other public works, including road clearing, street sanding and sidewalk clearing.

“We recognize this is a difficult situation for everyone involved and remain committed to resolution through the collective bargaining process,” the RM’s website said.

Members of the Operating Engineers of Manitoba Local 987 have been without a new agreement since Dec. 31, 2024. Negotiations for a new collective agreement remain unresolved.

The union rejected the municipality’s final three-year offer, while the municipality declined the union’s two-year proposal.

“The municipality’s goal is to successfully conclude negotiations to minimize the impact on our employees, our residents and our community,” the RM said.
