Manitoba spring flood risk low to moderate: province

The risk of flooding for most Manitoba rivers this spring is low to moderate, the province said Wednesday.
Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure’s Hydrologic Forecast Centre noted in its first flood outlook of the season that the spring risk remains dependent on weather conditions from now until the snow melts — including future snowfall and rainfall.
A moderate flood risk is in effect for the Red, Pembina, Assiniboine, Souris and Qu’Appelle rivers, the Interlake region including the Icelandic and Fisher rivers, and portions of the Saskatchewan River.
A low flood risk is in effect for Red and Assiniboine river tributaries including the Rat and Roseau rivers, eastern Manitoba, including the Winnipeg River basin and Whiteshell lakes area, and most other Manitoba lakes.
Lake levels for Lake Winnipeg and Lake Manitoba are well below normal, the province said.
Ice-cutting and breaking activities remain underway along the Red River to reduce the risk of ice-jam flooding.
An updated flood outlook is set to be released in late March.
Carruthers announces retirement from curling

One of Manitoba’s most decorated curlers is retiring.
Reid Carruthers, a nine-time provincial champion, announced his retirement from the sport on social media on Wednesday.
“As I step away from competitive play, I’m not filled with sadness, but with gratitude and pride. I am at peace with the decision as I leave the sport with lasting friendships, unforgettable memories, and a deep appreciation for everything curling has taught me — discipline, resilience, teamwork, and heart,” wrote Carruthers.
“Though this chapter is closing, I’m not saying goodbye to curling entirely. I look forward to continue to stay involved in the sport in some capacity, whether through coaching, mentorship, sparing or entering a few bonspiels.”
The 41-year-old curled with third BJ Neufeld, second Catlin Schneider, and lead Connor Njegovan this season. The group came up short at provincials in Selkirk earlier this month by losing the Page 3/4 Qualifier 10-5 to Kelly Marnoch.
Carruthers has appeared in 13 Briers, winning once back in 2011 while playing second for Jeff Stoughton. They went on to win the world men’s title that year in Regina. Carruthers also claimed the Canadian Mixed Doubles Championship in 2017 with Joanne Courtney before the duo earned silver at the 2017 World Mixed Doubles Curling in Lethbridge, Alta.
Carruthers currently coaches Team Kerri Einarson who recently won the Scotties Tournament of Hearts in a memorable final over fellow Manitoban Kaitlyn Lawes on Feb. 1. They will head to the upcoming World Women’s Curling Championship in Calgary (March 14-22).
