Man accused in sexual assault of teen

1:38 PM

A 24-year-old man faces sexual assault charges after police say he was caught with a teen he met online.

The man contacted the teen late last month through social media and they later met up several times, a Wednesday police news release stated.

On Friday, Winnipeg Police Service officers were sent to a residence on the 300 block of Oakview Avenue where the pair were discovered together.

The sexual assaults were then revealed, police said.

With the investigation turned over to the counter exploitation unit, Sterling Bergmann Camara was arrested Monday.

He is charged with luring a person under 16 by means of telecommunication, two counts of sexual assault and two counts of sexual interference.

He remains in custody.

Accused has charges upgraded to attempted murder

11:44 AM

A man arrested in October after another man was struck by a vehicle is facing an upgraded charge of attempted murder, police say.

Winnipeg Police Service officers were sent to the parking lot of a hotel on the 1000 block of McPhillips Street on Aug. 3, 2025 at 3 a.m. to check on a man who was hit by a vehicle.

Police said the victim, 40, and accused, 51, who did not know each other, got into an argument in the parking lot. As the victim walked away, the accused hit him with his vehicle, police said. The victim got up but was hit a second time before the accused drove off, police said.

The victim was sent to hospital in stable condition.

The accused was originally arrested on Oct. 9, 2025 and charged with assault with a weapon, dangerous operation of a conveyance causing bodily harm and uttering threats. He was released on an appearance notice.

The man was re-arrested Tuesday by the major crimes unit and faces the upgraded charges on the advice of the Manitoba Prosecution Service.

He was released on an undertaking.

Two injured in separate Winnipeg house fires

10:41 AM

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service personnel took two people to hospital after separate house fires Tuesday evening and early Wednesday morning.

The first fire broke out in a bungalow on the 500 block of Larsen Avenue at about 8:40 p.m. on Tuesday. Firefighters found heavy flames and smoke coming from the house when they arrived, but managed to get the blaze under control just after 9 p.m. Paramedics took one resident to hospital in unstable condition.

Firefighters were then called to a house fire on Avalon Road just after 12:30 a.m. Wednesday. It took just under an hour for crews to get the fire under control. One resident was taken to hospital in stable condition.

Winnipeg Transit buses can now be tracked in near-real time: city

10:22 AM

Winnipeg Transit riders are now able to track buses in near-real time using its online trip planning service or app.

Bus locations, based on GPS, will now appear as part of search results on Winnipeg Transit’s maps.

On the Navigo trip planning service, the map will show relevant buses for immediate trip plans, while the “explore routes” option will show buses currently travelling on the selected route. The “find stops and schedules” option will show the next five buses on route to a selected stop.

Clicking on a bus on the maps will provide more details, including how recently its location was updated. If a bus hasn’t recently updated its GPS location, it won’t appear on the app.

The city said on Wednesday that widespread issues with Winnipeg Transit’s GPS system last summer and fall have since been addressed.

Man accused of target shooting in rural intersection arrested

10:01 AM

Headingley RCMP arrested a man accused of shooting at a stop sign from his vehicle near a rural intersection on Sunday afternoon.

Mounties were called to the intersection of Highway 248 and Road 56 North in the Rural Municipality of Cartier just before 5 p.m. on Sunday, after a man driving south on the highway saw another vehicle parked near the intersection with a gun barrel sticking out of the driver’s side window.

As the driver, a 41-year-old man from Swan Lake First Nation, got closer to the parked vehicle, he heard a gunshot and initially thought his vehicle had been struck, RCMP said. He called 911 and Mounties immediately responded.

Officers determined the suspect was shooting at a stop sign, not the driver’s vehicle. His truck was not struck nor was he injured.

But the suspect, a 47-year-old man from the RM of Cartier, was arrested on firearms offences and released ahead of a court date in May in Winnipeg.

RCMP advise everyone handling firearms to get their gun licence and to remember the basic rules of firearm safety. Those include treating every gun as if it’s loaded, never pointing a firearm at something you’re not willing to destroy, to keep your finger off the trigger until you’re about to fire and to be sure of your target and what’s behind it.

RCMP HANDOUT A stop sign at the intersection where the man was arrested for gun offences.

Nestaweya River Trail closes for the season

9:25 AM

Warmer temperatures and rising river levels have led to the closure of both the Red River and Assiniboine River sections of the Nestaweya River Trail trail, The Forks announced on Wednesday.

As winter shifts toward spring, changing ice conditions mean it is no longer safe to maintain the route, the organization said in a news release.

It also marks the end of this year’s Trail Together adopt-a-metre fundraising campaign. Through the campaign, members of the community adopted 1,270 metres of trail, helping support the care and work that makes skating on the rivers possible each winter.

Winnipeggers had ample time to enjoy this year’s Nestaweya Trail, which was open for 62 days and extended more than 6 km, offering skating and walking trails from Churchill Drive on the Red River to the Hugo Docks on the Assiniboine River. This year fell short of last year’s 68-day season and is below the record 76 days set in 2019.

While the river trail season has come to a close, skating continues at The Forks. The Canopy Rink and Upper Trails remain open, weather permitting.
