Jets fall flat in loss to Rangers
9:38 PM
Those slim playoff hopes for the Winnipeg Jets are officially hanging by a thread.
Following a disheartening loss to the Anaheim Ducks earlier this week, the Jets fell 6-3 to the New York Rangers on Thursday at Canada Life Centre, leaving them with a 3-2 record on this eight-game homestand.
Isak Rosen, Kyle Connor and Gabe Vilardi scored for the Jets, while Connor Hellebuyck, making his seventh consecutive start, allowed five goals on 16 shots on goal.
The San Jose Sharks moved into eighth place in the Western Conference earlier on Thursday night and are six points up on the Jets.
The Jets, who slipped to 26-28-10, are back in action on Saturday against the league-leading Colorado Avalanche.
Suspect sought after guns stolen from home safe
2:57 PM
Police are asking for the public’s help after at least 12 guns were stolen from a house in the Rural Municipality of St. Clements.
RCMP were sent to the home, along Highway 44, on Sunday after a report of a break-in, believed to have happened in the previous 48 hours while the homeowners were away.
The gun safe inside the home was unlocked during the theft and at least a dozen long guns were stolen. Ammunition was also stolen from elsewhere in the home.
Snowmobile gear and tools were also taken.
No suspects have been identified, police say.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Selkirk RCMP at 204-482-1222 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477 or online.
Bail unit charges man after chase
12:39 PM
Four people were arrested trying to flee from a stolen vehicle by a new unit of officers monitoring bail suspects, the Winnipeg Police Service said Thursday.
Winnipeg Police Bail Compliance Unit officers attempted to stop a driver in a stolen 2011 Ford Mustang in Elmwood shortly after 8 p.m. Wednesday.
When officers tried to pull the vehicle over, near Talbot Avenue and Stadacona Street, the driver sped off, a Thursday WPS news release stated.
The police helicopter found the vehicle and led officers on the ground to the area of Poplar Avenue and Levis Street, where four people exited the vehicle and fled on foot.
All were arrested.
The driver, Roger Clint Genaille, 30, was found with two knives and a machete, police said. He is prohibited from driving in Canada and was the subject of an outstanding warrant for failing to comply with probation.
He faces numerous charges including possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, three counts of possession of a weapon and flight while being pursued by a peace officer.
He was detained in custody. The three passengers in the vehicle were released without charges.
The WPS announced earlier this month that the 12-officer unit had arrested 109 people accused of breaching bail conditions and submitted warrants for another 227 in its first two months of operation.

Woman injured after city bus hits bus shelter, shattering glass
11:26 AM
Winnipeg Transit says they’re investigating after a woman was injured from falling glass after a city bus hit a bus shelter downtown.
Transit said the incident took place just after noon on Tuesday, when their control centre received a report from an operator stating that his bus had hit the shelter at the corner of Portage Avenue and Fort Street.
In an email to the Free Press on Thursday, Transit said that initially, it was reported that there were no injuries.
“Later, the control centre received reports that a female was hit with falling glass and suffered injuries during the incident,” a statement from Transit said.
They said Transit immediately called the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service and dispatched a transit inspector to the scene.
An internal investigation into the incident is ongoing, Transit said.
