Three migrants arrested in southern Manitoba on Tuesday: RCMP
4:12 PM
Three migrants who illegally crossed the international border into Manitoba earlier this week have been turned over to the Canada Border Services Agency, the RCMP say.
Federal RCMP officer’s from the force’s border team were called to Provincial Trunk Highway 201 near Neuenberg at about 8 a.m. on Tuesday, after a member of the public spotted two possible migrants walking along the road.
Mounties later found the migrants at a local hospital and confirmed they had walked into Manitoba from the United States. After the individuals were treated for minor, cold-related injuries, RCMP officers arrested them and turned them over to the CBSA.
While the officers were at the hospital, at about 9:40 a.m., the RCMP border team were advised about another possible migrant who had stopped at a business in Rosengart, looking for a ride to Winnipeg.
Officers on the the ground and in the RCMP’s Black Hawk helicopter, which was already flying in the area, soon found the individual hiding in a parked vehicle. The migrant was turned over to CBSA.
At about noon on Tuesday, RCMP dispatchers were called about a suspicious individual loitering outside a school in the Rhineland area and Mounties arrested the person for human smuggling, but the individual was later released without charges.
Two charged in Selkirk Avenue shooting death
3:22 PM
Homicide detectives have arrested two suspects accused in the shooting death of a man in a Selkirk Avenue apartment block earlier this month.
Kingsley Murray Bruce, 40, died in hospital on March 3 after he was shot inside a two-storey brick apartment block at 675 Selkirk Ave., around 3 p.m.
Winnipeg Police Service investigators arrested Emmanuel Max Spence, 25, on Selkirk Avenue on Monday, and Thomas Jeremy Spence, 39, near Bannerman Avenue and McKenzie Street on Wednesday.
Both men have been charged with manslaughter and held in custody.
Police say the two suspects and the victim knew each other prior to the shooting.
Swan River couple threatened at gunpoint in home invasion: RCMP
1:52 PM
A Swan River couple were threatened at gunpoint in their house during a home invasion on Wednesday night.
RCMP were called to the couple’s home on 1st Avenue South in the northwestern Manitoba town at about 10:15 p.m.
The couple, both in their mid-60s, were inside when they heard a knock on the front door, but before they could open it, a man and a woman in masks busted into the home and pushed their way past the homeowners, Mounties say.
The female suspect threatened to shoot the couple if they didn’t follow their orders, stole the female resident’s wallet and some acetaminophen pills, before the robbers left.
The homeowners weren’t seriously hurt and Mounties say the victims knew the female suspect, indicating the incident wasn’t random.
RCMP arrested a 41-year-old nearby. She’s to be charged with robbery with a firearm, breaking and entering and uttering threats. Mounties are still looking for the other suspect.
Open house set for Lemay Forest’s future
1:34 PM
The Manitoba government is holding an open house on a proposed provincial park at Lemay Forest.
Lemay Forest spans 22.5 acres of public land in St. Norbert. The province said it would designate the area as a provincial park last April.
The open house will occur on March 19 at the St. Norbert Community Centre, 3450 Pembina Hwy., between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. and again from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Province opens new traffic inspection station
12:33 PM
The Manitoba government has funnelled $13 million into a new highway traffic inspection station and weigh scale near Headingley.
The hub opened Friday. It has modern inspection equipment allowing commercial vehicle officers to verify that trucks meet provincial safety, weight and regulatory standards.
Identifying overweight or unsafe vehicles will help reduce infrastructure damage, a government news release says. The station can inspect up to 250 trucks daily and will operate year-round.
There are also self-check systems where drivers can see their vehicle weight before entering inspections. This will help improve compliance and streamline inspection, Transportation Minister Lisa Naylor says in the release.
Medicine kit stolen from emergency scene
11:55 AM
Winnipeg police are on the lookout for a bag of medications stolen from an emergency scene Thursday night.
Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service crews were working on the 300 block of Stanley Street when a medical bag was taken.
The city warned the public in a Friday news release to stay away from the medicine, noting none of the drugs contain narcotics.
“Taking any amount of medication in the kit without medical supervision can be dangerous or fatal,” the City of Winnipeg said.
Most of the medications in the kit are administered intravenously and are packaged in vials. They should not be taken orally, the release said.
The incident was reported to the Winnipeg Police Service. Anyone with information on the whereabouts of the bag or medicine can call the WPS at 204-986-6222.
The WFPS is conducting an investigation into the incident.
