One person hurt in Sherbrook Street fire

One person was taken to hospital after fire broke out in a three-storey apartment building in the 400 block of Sherbrook Street around 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Firefighters launched an offensive attack while paramedics assessed and took one patient, who was in unstable condition, to hospital. Everyone else in the building got out safely, the city said in a news release.

The blaze, which was limited to the suite where it had started, was under control within 20 minutes.

The cause is under investigation and no damage estimate was available.

Two Lac du Bonnet men dead after highway crash

Two men are dead after a collision south of Lac du Bonnet Tuesday morning.

Police responded to the two-vehicle crash near the intersection of Highway 11 and Road 84 North, shortly after 7 a.m., RCMP said in a news release.

Investigators learned that a vehicle lost control on Highway 11 and hit a pickup truck travelling in the opposite direction.

The 71-year-old driver and 66-year-old passenger of the vehicle that lost control, both of whom were from Lac du Bonnet, died.

The driver of the pickup truck, a 71-year-old man from Beausejour, was not injured. His passenger, a 69-year-old woman, was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said poor road conditions and heavy snowfall are believed to be factors in the collision.

Winnipeg firefighters battle two blazes Monday

Winnipeg firefighters knocked down fires in a vacant house on Lisgar Avenue and multi-family home on Magnus Avenue on Monday.

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service was called to the vacant house on Lisgar in Point Douglas at about 5:15 p.m. and found heavy smoke coming from the building. Fire crews declared the blaze under control by just before 6:10 p.m.

No one was reported hurt.

Earlier, crews were called to the 1600 block of Magnus Avenue at about 3:45 p.m., where they got the fire under control by about 4:10 p.m.

City social workers helped the building’s residents find a place to stay. The fire department said it appears the fire was contained to the suite where it started.

Highway 11 near Lac du Bonnet reopened

Highway 11, from Highway 214 to Lac du Bonnet, has been reopened after it was closed earlier due to a collision.

Mounties were called to the collision, on Highway 11 near Road 84 N, just after 7 a.m., a spokeswoman said.

The RCMP did not say how many vehicles were involved or whether anyone was injured.

Chemawawin Cree Nation assault suspect arrested: RCMP

RCMP arrested an assault suspect who was the subject of a manhunt on Monday in Chemawawin Cree Nation.

Darren Lachose, 33, was found at a home in the community at about 6:30 p.m. Monday. He’s to be charged with aggravated assault, forcible confinement and aggravated sexual assault, among other offences.

RCMP allege Lachose violently assaulted a woman over several hours at a home on the Chemawawin Cree Nation over the weekend.

The incident was reported to RCMP on Sunday at about 9:45 a.m. The woman reported she was held the previous night and punched, kicked and struck with various weapons.

However, she was able to escape and called Mounties. She was taken to hospital for treatment of injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
