Three charged after homeowner threatened with shotgun

Three people have been charged in connection to an armed break-and-enter that took place earlier this week in Berens River.

On March 26, RCMP say they received a report the men were attempting to break into a home by smashing windows while using a sawed-off shotgun to threaten the homeowner. The suspects fled on foot before police arrived, but were quickly identified.

Officers were then able to locate the men at one of the suspect’s residences, with officers arresting one suspect at the door and another while he tried to flee through a back window. The third suspect was found behind the residence hiding on an island in the middle of a nearby river.

He was arrested on a winter road crossing without incident.

RCMP say the sawed-off shotgun was located inside the residence and the men now face numerous charges including break-and-enter, careless use of a firearm and possession of a weapon for dangerous purposes.

All were detained in custody and RCMP say its investigation is ongoing.

RCMP charge man in string of thefts, recover stolen goods

A 30-year-old man is facing numerous charges after RCMP investigated a series of thefts and break-and-enters in three Manitoba communities.

Gimli RCMP say the crimes took place at businesses and private properties in Arborg, the RM of Armstrong and the RM of Rockwood, with complaints filed to the RCMP over the last few months.

On Monday, RCMP executed a search warrant on a property in the RM of Rockwood and recovered several stolen items, including two tractors, seven chainsaws and a variety of other stolen goods like tools, a rifle, fish finders and ATV accessories.

The suspect, a resident of the RM of Rockwood, now faces charges that include break-and-enter, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000 and possession of a firearm without a licence.

He’s been remanded in custody and RCMP say the investigation is ongoing.

Suspect charged with impaired driving after pedestrian struck, critically injured in rural Manitoba

A Pine River man is in police custody and facing impaired driving charges after a pedestrian was critically injured in a hit-and-run incident early Monday morning.

Mounties responded to a report of the incident around 2:25 a.m. and learned a 36-year-old man was hit by a vehicle on the 500 block of Second Avenue in Pine River, a rural community located about 80 kilometres north of Dauphin, Manitoba RCMP said in a news release Wednesday.

The pedestrian was transported to the hospital in Winnipeg in critical condition, police said.

The driver of the vehicle left the scene. Police located and arrested a suspect a few hours later, RCMP said.

A 46-year-old man from Pine River is facing multiple driving offences, including failing to stop after an accident causing bodily harm and impaired driving.

Comedian Josh Johnson adds second show at Burt

The standup star and Daily Show co-host already performs an 8:30 show on Sunday, June 14; he will also do a 5 p.m. show on the same day.

Juno winner Daniel Caesar plays arena in August

Toronto R&B star Daniel Caesar, fresh off his double win at the 2026 Juno Awards (Contemporary R&B album and international achievement award), is bringing his world tour to Canada Life Centre on Aug. 10.

The Best Part singer is touring in support of his latest album, Son of Spergy. 070 Shake will open the show in Winnipeg.

City removing trees infected by Emerald ash borer

The city will remove dozens of trees found to have been infected by the Emerald ash borer.

Dozens of trees, in the area near Glenwood Community Centre and Glenwood School, will be removed this week.

The city says it’s the first major infection found since the bug was detected in the city’s ash tree population in 2017. At that time, the city had expected it to decimate the trees, but it credits quick actions with tree removal and “proactive preventative injections” with slowing it down.

Only 22 trees were removed between 2017 and last year.

Minimum wage to increase by 40 cents in October

Manitoba’s minimum wage will rise to $16.40 from $16 effective Oct. 1.

The 40-cent increase is in line with the rate of inflation, rounded up to the nearest five cents. In 2025, the minimum wage was raised 20 cents

Manitoba Federation of Labour president Kevin Rebeck was critical of the increase, suggesting “our minimum wage falls well below a living wage” in a press release.

The provincial government is required to announce the annual minimum wage increase by April 1.
