Jets filled in by Flyers, lose 7-1

The Winnipeg Jets were trounced 7-1 by the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday night at Canada Life Centre.

This was as close to a must-win as it gets for the Jets, who entered play five points back of the Los Angeles Kings for the final Western Conference wildcard spot.

But they came out flat against a Flyers team fighting to stay above the playoff line in the Eastern Conference.

Haydn Fleury scored the only goal for Winnipeg, which falls to 35-32-12. The Jets now truly need a Manitoba Miracle with three regular-season games remaining. They would need to win them all and get some serious help on the out-of-town scoreboard.

Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck, starting for a ninth straight game and 20th time in the past 22 outings, only lasted two periods. He was given the hook after surrendering five goals on 20 shots. Eric Comrie came on in relief and surrendered two more.

Sean Couturier led the way for the Flyers with two goals and an assist, while 10 different players registered at least a point.

The Jets now hit the road for two games beginning Monday night in Vegas.

Flood risk worsens in Interlake and Parkland regions

The province’s latest flood outlook has worsened in both the Interlake and Parkland regions of Manitoba.

The province’s hydrologic forecast Centre now says there is an increased risk of major flooding along both the Fisher and Icelandic Rivers while there is an elevated risk of overland flooding in the Parkland region.

The province said weather conditions could see peak flows on the Fisher River at either 2014 levels or, if the melt is faster, two feet higher to 2022 levels.

The province says the rest of the flood outlook across Manitoba is unchanged with a moderate flood risk along the Red, Assiniboine, and Saskatchewan Rivers and a low flood risk on the Winnipeg River basin.

Military veterans arrive to help Peguis fight flood

A volunteer team of military veterans, first responders and citizens has arrived to help Peguis First Nation fight what is threatening to be a devastating flood.

Team Rubicon, a veteran-led humanitarian organization, arrived at the community 180 kilometres north of Winnipeg on Friday and is busy today mobilizing personnel and resources to assist.

Up to 100 volunteers are expected to continue arriving through the weekend to support sandbagging to protect homes and infrastructure.

In the last month, winter storms and cool temperatures have resulted in changing what provincial flood forecasters said was going to be a moderate risk of a significant flood to a warning water levels could reach the largest flood on record in 2022.

That flood caused hundreds of people to be evacuated and more than $275 million in damages.
