Canada Life cyberattack under investigation
8:54 AM
Insurance provider Canada Life is reporting a cyber incident involving unauthorized access to “certain applications” through an employee account.
“The incident has been contained and regular operations and services continue,” the company announced in a release this week.
Canada Life said that after it identified the incident, it launched an investigation with support from third-party cybersecurity experts, and notified authorities.
“While we are finalizing a thorough analysis to understand the exact nature and full scope of impact, we have begun communicating with our customers,” the release said. Its assessment on Monday was that it is “a small proportion” of customers who may have been impacted.
Individuals whose personal information was affected will be contacted directly, and will be offered credit monitoring protection at no cost, the company announced.
Commercial building on Henry Avenue burns
7:15 AM
Firefighters worked to put out a fire on Henry Avenue early Friday morning.
At 2:36 a.m., the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to reports of a structure fire in a commercial building in the 1000 block of Henry.
At the scene, crews found heavy flames and smoke coming from the building. Firefighters used a defensive strategy because it was unsafe to enter the building. The hazardous materials team responded because there were reports of chemicals in the building.
Firefighters deployed a drone, and crews used an aerial ladder to spray water on the fire. Firefighters declared the fire under control at 5:08 a.m.
No injuries were reported. The fire is under investigation.
