Winnipeg school bus hits tree on Monday morning

3:41 PM

Police are investigating after a school bus collided with a tree on Forest Cove Drive on Monday morning.

Emergency crews were called to the collision, which took place in the Inkster Gardens neighbourhood, at around 8:45 a.m. said a spokesman with the Winnipeg Police Service.

There were 27 children on the bus at the time of the crash, as well as the driver, said the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service in a statement.

No one was injured as a result of the crash, said the WFPS, noting the driver and passenger children were assessed on scene by paramedics.

There were no arrests as a result of the crash and police say its investigation is ongoing.

The Free Press has reached out to school officials for more information.

Crews extinguish vacant building fire in West End

Fire crews quickly put out a blaze in a vacant home in the city’s West End Sunday night.

Just after 8 p.m., firefighters responded to a blaze in a vacant two-and-a-half-storey home on the 200 block of Simcoe Street. The fire was under control by 8:42 p.m.

Crews searched the building and no one was found. The fire is under investigation.

Fire crews douse grass and bush fire in Transcona

9:42 AM

Winnipeg firefighters doused a large wildfire in a nature preserve in Transcona early Sunday evening.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service crews were called to the Transcona Bioreserve at about 5:45 p.m., where they found a grass and brush fire about an acre in size.

Crews with hoses and specialized wildland firefighting equipment worked to contain and then extinguish the blaze. The fire department said it used a drone to look for hot spots to direct crews toward. Firefighters got the fire under control by just before 6:30 p.m.

Winnipeg firefighters also responded to two house fires on Sunday, one in the morning and another in the evening. No one was hurt in either blaze.
