Feedback wanted on final design for Omand’s Creek bridge

6:42 PM

The public is being asked for input on the final design of the new Omand’s Creek pedestrian bridge.

The City of Winnipeg has now examined several designs for the bridge and want the public to say which is their favourite, said a city release Thursday.

The current bridge needs to be replaced, as it’s poorly designed and prone to flooding.

Residents are being asked about how the proposed designs support people in the park and how well it balances accessibility with nature.

An online survey is open until June 14. Residents can also attend two drop-in events on June 2 at the park and June 9 at the Wolseley Farmers Market.

More information about the designs and the survey can be found at winnipeg.ca/omandscreekbridge.

Driver who struck cyclist has suspended licence: police

2:19 PM

Winnipeg police say a pickup truck driver who struck a cyclist near Dugald and Murdock roads in Transcona on Wednesday was behind the wheel with a suspended licence.

Winnipeg Police Service officers were called to the scene at about 5:30 a.m., where they found an injured 23-year-old man in the ditch off Dugald Road, just east of Murdock Road, and gave him first aid until paramedics arrived.

The man was taken to hospital, where he remains in critical, but stable, condition, police said on Thursday.

The driver of the Dodge Ram pickup, a 27-year-old woman, remained at the scene and cooperated with officers, police said.

Traffic investigators have since confirmed she was driving with a suspended licence.

They’re still investigating the case and have asked anyone with potentially relevant video footage, including from dashcams, security cameras or cell phones, to call their office at 204-986-7085. Tipsters can also call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 204-786-8477.

Winnipeg property tax bills on the way

11:39 AM

This year’s property tax bills are in the mail.

About 240,500 households will receive the bills, the City of Winnipeg said Thursday. The deadline for paying the bills is June 30.

The city said Winnipeggers can pay the bills through the Tax Instalment Payment Plan, in person at a financial institution, by telephone or online banking, by credit card through third-party provider Plastiq, by mail or courier, and in person at city hall’s Susan A. Thompson Building at 510 Main St. or Access St. Boniface at 170 Goulet St.

Man, 23, charged in Interlake homicide

11:25 AM

A homicide suspect who was released from custody pending further investigation has been rearrested and charged in a slaying in an Interlake community.

RCMP said Chase Paul, 23, is charged with second-degree murder after a 23-year-old man’s body was found in a wooded area in Lake Manitoba First Nation a few hours after the victim was reported missing April 30.

Paul, who is from the First Nation, was arrested that day and later released because “further investigative steps were needed,” police said in a news release Thursday.

Paul was arrested in Winnipeg on Monday, after the Manitoba Prosecution Service authorized the second-degree murder charge and a warrant was issued, RCMP said.

No Manitoba cases of hantavirus: province’s public health officer

11:22 AM

Manitobans don’t appear to be at risk of hantavirus, the chief provincial public health officer said Thursday.

“This is a serious but isolated event,” Dr. Brent Roussin said. “We’ll see how this evolves.”

Several people on a cruise ship travelling to Spain’s Canary Islands have contracted the virus; three passengers have died on board.

The World Health Organization stressed there’s a “low” risk of transmission to the general public, Thomson Reuters reported Thursday.

Cruise passengers are expected to disembark Sunday.

“This reminds us that we continue to see emerging infections over time, and we need to ensure we’re taking precautions,” Roussin said.

“But at this point, no, I’m not aware of any Manitobans (with cases), and… Manitoba is not going to be affected by this.”

Firefighters, police at scene of Langside Street house blaze

9:02 AM

City fire crews are battling a blaze on Langside Street, where flames have damaged multiple homes.

The cause of the blaze and time of the call were not immediately clear, but police cordoned off a section of the roadway while firefighters worked. Investigators from the Winnipeg Police Service’s forensic unit were also on scene.

A home at 584 Langside St. suffered the most damage, but two nearby homes appear to have been impacted as well.

WPS spokesperson Const. Claude Chancy said it was too early to provide additional details about the incident, while firefighting efforts were still underway.

The Free Press has reached out to the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service for more information.
