Sagkeeng man dead after ATV rollover

Manitoba RCMP say a 36-year-old man is dead following an ATV rollover near Sagkeeng First Nation on Thursday.

Officers responded to a report of a single-vehicle rollover on North Shore Road just after 4:30 p.m. The man, from Sakeeng, was found in the south ditch beside the ATV.

RCMP, First Nation Safety Officers and EMS provided first aid before the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators said alcohol is not believed to have been a factor. The victim, whose name was not released, was not wearing a helmet.

RCMP continue to investigate.

Nason announces bid to reclaim Transcona council seat

Former Transcona city councillor Shawn Nason has announced he will be running to reclaim his seat on council.

Nason lost the 2022 civic election to Coun. Russ Wyatt, who did not run against Nason in the 2018 municipal race.

The one-term councillor said in a news release announcing his candidacy he “looks forward to continuing conversations with residents about the future of Transcona and the priorities that matter most to local families and neighbourhoods.”

“Serving the people of Transcona was one of the greatest honours of my life,” Nason said in the release.

Registration for candidates for city council begins June 30.

Chartrand announces bid for ninth MMF presidential term

Manitoba Métis Federation president David Chartrand announced he will run for a ninth term.

Chartrand has led the Métis government since he was first elected in 1996.

“Built over three decades of dedicated leadership, David Chartrand’s leadership speaks for itself,” a news release announcing his candidacy Friday said. “His leadership has been built on a single unifying principle: secure the future of the Red River Métis by protecting and enhancing the foundation that has been laid.”

The election will be held June 23.

Opening of provincial park campgrounds marked by wet, chilly weather

Government officials marked the official opening of the summer camping season Friday, as Manitobans braced themselves for what is forecast to be a wet and chilly May long weekend.

Most provincial park campgrounds are open for the long weekend, although many have limited water services due to colder spring weather. Campers are advised to bring their own drinking water, Environment Minister Mike Moyes said in a news release.

Provincial campgrounds in northern Manitoba remain snow-covered, and their opening dates have been postponed. Campers with reservations impacted by the delays are being notified, the release said.

Those include:

• The Campers Cove and Pioneer Bay campgrounds in Clearwater Provincial Park, now rescheduled to open May 22.
• Wekusko Falls, Bakers Narrows, Grass River (Gyles, Reed Lake and Iskwasum Landing campgrounds) and Paint Lake provincial parks will be delayed until at least May 29.
• North Steeprock Lake Provincial Park (Porcupine Hills) will be delayed until at least May 22.

Duck Mountain Provincial Park campgrounds will open as planned, but water service will not be available due to overnight temperatures. Pit privies are available in camping bays. Some campsites may be snow-covered, but people with reservations can move to alternate sites, the province said.

Environment and Climate Change Canada is projecting possible showers near Winnipeg Friday, with the temperature slated to drop as low as 4 C overnight.

Saturday’s low is 2 C. Low temperatures are also forecast for Sunday, along with periods of rain that could continue until Tuesday, when there is a possibility of snow.

Fire safety urged amid dry, windy conditions

Authorities are investigating a football-field size fire that broke out in the Assiniboine Forest Thursday.

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service is urging residents to be extra cautious amid dry and windy conditions after putting out a forest fire believed to have been ignited by human activity.

“Fires cannot be started when wind speeds or gusts exceed 25 km/h. This includes fires in approved backyard fire pits, fires in city parks and any other open-air fire, even with a permit,” WFPS said in a news release Friday.

Firefighters responded to reports of a wildland fire in Winnipeg’s largest urban forest shortly after 7:30 p.m. Thursday. No injuries were reported.

Crews declared the blaze under control within an hour, after deploying specialized wildland firefighting equipment.

The WFPS is calling on the public to take extra care putting out cigarettes, educate children about fire safety and call 911 immediately upon coming across a forest fire.
