Victim of house fire dies

A 73-year-old man has died after he was badly burned in a fire last week.

Alvin Flett was taken to hospital in critical condition after his Lock Street home caught fire May 11.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service said the house was a writeoff.

His daughter Melanie Flett has said he had sustained second- and third-degree burns on half his body.

She said he died at 2 p.m. Sunday.

HSC Children’s Hospital flagged as measles exposure site

Health officials are warning of a new measles exposure location in Winnipeg.

As of May 9, there have been 568 confirmed and 74 probable cases of measles in Manitoba this year. Nineteen confirmed and two probable cases were recorded in May.

Provincial public health officials said Tuesday that people who were at the Health Sciences Centre Children’s Hospital emergency department waiting room and minor treatment areas on May 14 from 1:05 a.m. to 10:40 a.m. may have been exposed to the virus.

Infants younger than six months and pregnant people are advised not to get the measles vaccine.

The measles virus spreads through close contact with an infected person and through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes.

The province has recorded more measles cases so far this year than it did in all of 2025, when 319 were recorded.

Lotto ticket bought in Manitoba big winner

Someone who purchased a lottery ticket in Manitoba just became $46 million richer.

The Western Canadian Lottery Corporation confirmed a ticket bought in Manitoba won Saturday’s Lotto 6/49 gold ball draw — a cool $46 million.

There were also two winners of the $5-million classic draw, with tickets purchased in Ontario and Yellowknife.

Winners have one year from the draw date to claim their prizes.

Crews respond to two fires, including one at vacant home

A fire at a vacant home was one of two blazes fires crews were called to in a period of less than 12 hours.

On Monday at 4:40 p.m., firefighters were called to a vacant home on the 400 block of Maryland Street, said a Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service release Tuesday.

Smoke and flames could be seen by arriving crews and they had the fire under control a short time later.

At 2:05 a.m. Tuesday, crews were also called to a house fire on the 200 block of Mill Rock Road.

Finding heavy smoke and flames at the home, WFPS said crews attacked the fire from the outside due to safety reasons. It was declared under control approximately 90 minutes later.

No injuries were reported in either of the fires and both are under investigation.
