Fire crews extinguish second blaze at Transcona bioreserve

Winnipeg fire crews put out another large fire at a nature preserve Friday afternoon.
Crews responded to the Transcona bioreserve near Devonshire Drive just before 4:30 p.m. The fire spanned about 10,000 sq. ft. and firefighters had to use specialized wildfire fighting equipment to douse the flames.
The fire was put out about an hour later. No one was hurt.
Meantime, an apartment block was temporarily evacuated early Saturday morning due to fire. Crews went to the building on the 600 block of Ellice Avenue and found smoke and flames coming from the building. The fire was put out an hour later.
The city’s emergency social services responded to provide temporary support to displaced residents. No one was hurt. The fire is under investigation.
Driver dies following collision with water truck Friday

A 49-year-old man has died after driving into a parked water truck in St. James Friday.
Police say the man, who was driving a 2020 Hyundai Kona, hit the truck at a “high rate of speed” on Cavalier Drive, just north of Hillary Crescent around 12:30 p.m.

Police seek dash cam footage after pedestrian struck Thursday

A woman in her 50s was taken to hospital in unstable condition Thursday after being hit around 5 p.m. by an SUV near Main Street and Mountain Avenue, a Saturday news release states.
Police say the driver, who was uninjured, stayed on scene and spoke with officers. Northbound Main Street remained closed to traffic during the investigation.

Man charged after pointing gun in restaurant: police

A 25-year-old man is facing weapons and mischief charges after allegedly pointing a handgun in a restaurant and later, breaking an apartment window in the Booth neighbourhood Friday.
Police say around 9:45 p.m. the man, who was believed to be intoxicated, pointed a handgun in the air after he was refused service at a restaurant on the 2700 block of Portage Avenue.
Patrons and staff self-evacuated the establishment and no injuries were reported. The man fled on foot.
Around 10 p.m., the man visited an apartment complex on the 200 block of Booth Drive where police say he was seen smashing a window while holding the handgun.
The man was arrested on the 200 block of Ronald Street. Police seized a CO2-powered imitation handgun, CO2 cylinders and a baton.
The suspect is facing two counts of possession of a weapon and two counts of mischief under $5,000. He was released on an undertaking.
Man, 37, facing drug trafficking charges

A 37-year-old man is in custody after Winnipeg police say he was seen selling drugs downtown Friday afternoon.
Police arrested the man near Ellice Avenue and Hargrave Street around 4:20 p.m. after they say they witnessed a “hand-to-hand drug transaction.”
Officers seized a loaded handgun, individual packages of crack cocaine and fentanyl and around $490 during the arrest.
The man is facing various firearms and drug trafficking charges. He was detained in custody.
