Suspect in King Edward hostage situation dies of injuries

A 34-year-old man has died after being shot by Winnipeg police during a hostage situation Friday.

Winnipeg police say members of the violent offender apprehension unit attempted to stop a vehicle around 10:27 a.m. as the driver had outstanding warrants and was reported to have a gun.

Officers say the man rammed into the police vehicle before driving off. He was later seen in the King Edward neighbourhood and after a foot pursuit, police say he broke into a residence on the 400 block of King Edward Street.

At 11:09 a.m., police say a man exited the home and told first responders two teenage girls were being held hostage by the suspect. One girl was rescued through a window.

A fire was set inside the residence prompting the second teen’s rescue, a Saturday news release states. Police say the suspect then exited the home brandishing a firearm and officers shot him.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba is investigating the incident.

Crews extinguish three house fires Saturday morning

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service was called to a home on the 600 block of Logan Avenue around 8:48 a.m. for reports of a fire.

Crews attacked the flames and declared the fire under control at 9:32 a.m.

Firefighters also attended a burning home on the 1400 block of Winnipeg Avenue West around 8:33 a.m. That fire was extinguished by 8:57 a.m.

A vacant house fire on the 100 block of Syndicate Street broke out around 6:31 a.m. The blaze was declared under control at 7:20 a.m.

No injuries were reported and the fires are being investigated, a city news release states.

New spray pad coming to Fort Richmond in 2027

A 5,700-square-foot accessible spray pad will be built at the South Winnipeg Community Centre’s Fort Richmond location and aims to open in 2027, a city news release announced Saturday.

The outdoor facility at 666 Silverstone Ave. will include pathways, seating areas, shade structure, bike racks, and trees.

The site has received $1 million of funding through the Community Stream of the federal government’s Build Communities Strong Fund and $500,000 from the city.
