City temporarily suspending caterpillar control program to focus on mosquito control

The City of Winnipeg is temporarily suspending its tree pest caterpillar control program.

Officials made the decision to suspend the program for one-to-two weeks to shift city crews to focus on mosquito larviciding.

The city will issue a notice when it resumes the caterpillar program.

Body found in Red River near Roseau River First Nation

Manitoba First Nations Police Service investigators are trying to determine the circumstances of a Roseau River First Nation man’s death after his body was found in the Red River last month.

MFNPS were called after someone discovered a body in the Red River, east of Roseau River, on May 14. The First Nation is about 80 kilometres south of Winnipeg.

Investigators have since identified the dead man as Reuban Gabriel Atkinson, of Roseau River.

Investigators are asking for the public’s help as they look into how Atkinson died. They ask anyone with potentially helpful information to call the Roseau River detachment at 204-427-3383, or the service’s anonymous tip line at 1-833-978-0048 or by email at TIPS@MFNP.ca.

One in hospital after apartment suite fire

One person was taken to hospital in critical condition after a fire broke out in an apartment building suite Tuesday night on River Avenue.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service crews were sent to the three-story building on the 100 block of River with initial reports suggesting people may be trapped in the building, a city news release Wednesday said.

Crews entered the building and had the fire under control shortly after 7 p.m.

One person was found in the suite where the fire started and was taken to hospital.

All other occupants evacuated the building before crews arrived. Seven people were assessed at the scene but did not require further treatment.

A Winnipeg Transit bus was sent to the scene to act as a temporary shelter for residents. The city’s emergency social services team also assisted.

The WFPS and Winnipeg Police Service continue to investigate.

About an hour later, fire crews were sent to another apartment building — this time on the 400 block of Elgin Avenue.

Crews attacked a fire in one of the suites of the high-rise and declared the blaze under control at 8:15 p.m.

No one was hurt.

Damage estimates for both fires were not available.

Flooding, power outages cancel classes

Storm-related power outages and damage have prompted multiple school closures across Winnipeg.

Elementary, middle and high school leaders in communities impacted by strong winds and hail called off classes early Wednesday.

The Winnipeg School Division has asked students not to report to Collège Churchill High School, citing “flooding and major water damage.”

John Taylor Collegiate in the St. James-Assiniboia School Division has cancelled almost all morning programming due to the loss of power. Grade 12 students who were scheduled to write a math exam today are the exception.

“(Test-takers) will be moved to a classroom space with plenty of natural light,” the high school wrote in a social media post.

SJASD’s Hedges Middle School and Buchanan School have also announced closures.
