2:58 PM
Winnipeg police arrested a man and a woman after executing a search warrant on an Elgin Avenue West home on Saturday evening.
Winnipeg Police Service officers began investigating reports drugs were being sold out of the residence on the 1400 block of Elgin Avenue West last month.
At about 8 p.m. on Saturday, officers executed the warrant and found about 85 grams of methamphetamine, 18 grams of fentanyl, some pills, a pellet rifle, a BB handgun, drug packaging and stolen licence plates.
A 35-year-old woman who was in the home and a 47-year-old man who arrived there while police were searching it were arrested and charged with several drug and weapons offences.
RCMP log two crashes near Grandview
2:34 PM
RCMP responded to two collisions near Grandview on Saturday including one where an SUV ended up in a river.
On Saturday just before noon, Dauphin RCMP were called to a crash on Highway 366 where a van lost control after hitting gravel and flipped, said an RCMP release Monday.
The driver was wearing his seatbelt and was not injured.
Later on at 4:10 p.m., RCMP received a report an SUV had gone off Highway 5 and into a nearby river, said the release.
The Grandview Fire Department and EMS responded, rescuing a 25-year-old man from the roof of the SUV, said RCMP.
Police said the driver was towing a cattle chute when he lost control while coming over a hill, and ended up in the river. No injuries were reported.
RCMP said no charges are expected.

More than $225,000 in contraband seized at Stony Mountain Institution
2:31 PM
The Correctional Service of Canada is touting the vigilance of its officers after more than $225,000 worth of contraband drugs, tobacco and other items were seized at Stony Mountain Institution last week.
In a release Monday, the CSC said $225,200 of methamphetamine, amphetamines, THC concentrate, tobacco, rolling papers, along with a cell phone and related accessories, were confiscated over a two-day period last Wednesday and Thursday.
A police investigation is underway.
CSC said it employs a range of measures to prevent drugs and other contraband from entering federal institutions, including ion scanners and drug-detector dogs used to search buildings, visitors, inmates, and personal property. The agency continues to beef up efforts to intercept contraband and maintain a safe and secure environment for staff, inmates, and visitors. CSC also works closely with police to address attempts to introduce prohibited items into correctional facilities.
Members of the public can report security-related concerns, including suspected drug use or trafficking in federal institutions, through CSC’s confidential toll-free tip line at 1-866-780-3784. Callers may remain anonymous.
Two motorcyclists killed in highway collision
1:42 PM
Two Manitoba motorcyclists are dead after a highway collision north of Selkirk Saturday afternoon.
The accident occurred around 1:15 p.m., when a large group of motorcycles travelling north on Provincial Road 320 turned west on the access road to Highway 4, in the RM of St. Andrews, RCMP said in a news release Monday.
One of the motorcycles was struck by a southbound pickup truck while completing the turn. The driver and passenger died on scene, RCMP said
Friends and relatives identified the victims as Dan Keats, 66, and Brenda Lee, 65. The married couple, both from Winnipeg, were members of the Winnipeg Harley Riders Association and had been participating in a poker derby ride on the day of the crash.
The driver of the pickup truck, a 26-year-old man from the RM of St. Andrews, was not injured. The investigation is ongoing, RCMP said.
Two new transitional housing facilities created
12:49 PM
Winnipeg has two new transitional housing facilities for women and children fleeing gender-based violence.
The first, called Standing Eagle, was finished in January. Its 11 downtown Winnipeg units are fully occupied.
Morning Light, a second housing block, is expected to be done construction this month. Occupants could fill the 15-unit building, in West Broadway, in July.
All three levels of government have put money towards the projects. The facilities were developed through Ottawa’s Rapid Housing Initiative.
Tenants can generally stay up to two years. While there, they receive on-site supports from Family Dynamics, Ikwe Widdjiitiwin and New Journey Housing.
People pay around 30 per cent of their income for the rent.
No charges against police in incident caught on video: IIU
12:39 PM
Manitoba’s police oversight agency says no officer will be charged after a video surfaced of Winnipeg police striking a man and grabbing him by the hair during an arrest earlier this year.
“Following due consideration of all the circumstances, the civilian director (Bruce Sychuk) will not authorize charges,” said a news release from the Independent Investigation Unit on Monday. “The IIU investigation is now completed and closed.”
On Feb. 17, the Winnipeg Police Service received a voicemail from someone saying he had recorded video during an arrest on Feb. 12 at approximately 9:45 a.m.
The video footage showed an officer “standing over a male lying prone on the ground” and a second officer appeared to strike the man in the head or shoulder area before handcuffing him.
The man was brought to his feet and searched. The officer then grabbed the accused by the hair, led him to a cruiser and forcefully placed him inside.
The incident occurred after members of the Manitoba integrated violent offender apprehension unit were sent to an apartment on the 700 block of Notre Dame Avenue to arrest a man and woman, who were wanted for robbery and aggravated assault.
Police said the man fled through a rear window but was later located on the 700 block of Toronto Street and arrested.
The full report from the oversight agency has not yet been made public as the man in the video is still before the court on charges related to the incident.
Woman arrested after man slain on Toronto Street
12:19 PM
A woman accused of killing a man at a Toronto Street home on Saturday afternoon has been charged with manslaughter.
Winnipeg Police Service officers were called at about 3 p.m. Saturday to a “serious incident” at the home on the 700 block of Toronto, near Wellington Avenue, where they found a man suffering “life-threatening” injuries. He was rushed to hospital in critical condition, but died.
Police arrested a woman at the scene. Homicide detectives have identified the victim as Trencent Francois, 21. He lived in Winnipeg and was a member of Nelson House First Nation.
Precious Rayne Walker, 20, was charged with manslaughter and held in custody.
Detectives are still investigating the slaying and ask anyone with information that could be of assistance to call the homicide unit at 204-986-6508 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 204-786-8477 (TIPS).
Police spokesman Const. Pat Saydak said he did not know whether the victim and the accused knew each other prior to the killing.
Walker has not been convicted of a crime in Manitoba as an adult, court records show. She’s pending on a charge of mischief to property under $5,000 allegedly committed in May this year.
