New driver ticketed after crashing into Dauphin restaurant

A new driver crashed a van into the side of a Dauphin restaurant injuring a woman who was sitting inside the eatery on Tuesday morning.

At about 10:45 a.m. police were called to the crash on the 1500 block of Main Street South in Dauphin, said an RCMP news release.

Officers arrived on scene with the Dauphin Fire Department and determined the novice driver mistook the gas pedal for the brake, driving the van into the side of the building before coming to a stop, said RCMP.

A 20-year-old woman sitting at the closest table inside suffered minor injuries as a result of the crash.

RCMP issued the driver a fine of $672 for careless driving under the Highway Traffic Act.

Winnipeg Transit operator arrested for allegedly driving bus drunk

A Winnipeg Transit driver was arrested Monday evening for allegedly operating his bus while drunk.

Patrol officers were called to the transit depot on the 400 block of Osborne Street just before 7 p.m., the Winnipeg Police Service said on Tuesday.

Officers learned the man had just returned to the transit depot in his bus, where other Winnipeg Transit staff, who believed he was drunk, questioned him and called authorities, police said.

The 28-year-old is facing charges of driving while impaired and fail or refusing to comply with a breath demand. He was let out on an appearance notice ahead of his next court date.

Selkirk launches free transit for youth

The City of Selkirk has unveiled a new transit pass to allow students aged 12 to 21 to ride buses in the region at no charge over the summer break.

During a morning news conference, Mayor Larry Johannson announced a new initiative, dubbed “Next Stop,” to help regularly transport about 1,700 students from Selkirk, St. Andrews and St. Clements at no cost to them or their families.

“We’re going to work with (Selkirk) over the next few months to make sure that when you come back to school in the fall, no one under 18 has to pay for transit, at all,” Premier Wab Kinew told a crowd of students and other attendees gathered at Lord Selkirk Regional Comprehensive Secondary School.

“That means more freedom, more independence — but it’s also better for the environment and we hope that this is going to make good habits as you grow up and make your lives here in Manitoba.”

The premier’s remarks prompted students to erupt into a choir singing Wheels on the Bus.

The Kinew government’s 2026 budget includes funding to provide students with universal access to public transit in Winnipeg, Brandon, Selkirk and Flin Flon.

Man dead after falling from roof in workplace accident

A 25-year-old roofer fell to his death Monday morning while working on an apartment block in Portage la Prairie.

Police responded to the building, located on 14th Street Northwest, around 10:30 a.m., where they found emergency responders treating a person on the ground. Investigators learned the man fell between 12 to 15 feet from the roof. It did not appear he was wearing a safety harness, RCMP said in a news release Tuesday.

The man died on the scene.

RCMP and Manitoba Workplace Safety and Health have launched an investigation.
