Software developer to run for mayor

A software developer is the ninth person to register a bid to become Winnipeg’s next mayor.

Noah Redden has signed up for his first political race, with goals to boost Winnipeg Transit service, add cycling infrastructure and increase resources for people coping with addictions and homelessness.

If elected, Redden said he would hire more transit drivers and increase Winnipeg’s bus fleet.

“That would enable us to run more trips during the day as well as more trips later into the night to support shift workers who rely on transit. I would increase investment in bike infrastructure around our city to allow for safer trips,” said Redden.

The 27-year-old political rookie said he would also try to create more shelter space and better co-ordinate the city’s work with community groups that support people who are homeless and/or coping with addictions.

Election day is set for Oct. 28.

Mayor Scott Gillingham is seeking another term, while Umar Hayat, Christopher Clacio, Michael Vogiatzakis, Mazher Alam, Don Woodstock, Josh Pagdato and Johnny Calderon have also registered.

Jets add depth D-man in trade

The Winnipeg Jets made a move for a depth defenceman on Monday, acquiring Jack St. Ivany from the Pittsburgh Penguins for forward David Gustafsson.

St. Ivany, who turns 27 next month, has nine assists in 53 NHL games with the Penguins and he could get a shot to break camp with the Jets, depending on the recovery time required for Elias Salomonsson (who had shoulder surgery).

St. Ivany has one more season on his contract with an AAV of $850,000 in the NHL before he can become an unrestricted free agent on July 1 of 2027.

Gustafsson, 26, was chosen by the Jets in the second round of the 2018 NHL Draft, spent all of last season with the Manitoba Moose of the American Hockey League and has six goals and 20 points in 149 games with the Jets.

Man charged after allegedly pointing handgun at security guard

A 50-year-old Winnipeg man is facing multiple firearms charges after allegedly pointing a handgun at a security guard following a dispute at a business on Ellice Avenue.

Winnipeg police said officers were called to the 1300 block of Ellice on June 20 after a man became involved in a heated argument with staff and was escorted from the premises by security. Police say the man then produced a handgun, pointed it at a security guard and fled.

A suspect was identified and on Saturday, officers executed two search warrants at an apartment in the 800 block of Golspie Street, where the suspect was arrested.

Police said they seized a loaded 9 mm handgun, a 3D-printed P80 firearm and a large quantity of assorted ammunition.

Clinton James Michael MacDonald has been charged with pointing a firearm and multiple firearms-related offences, including possession of loaded prohibited or restricted firearms, unauthorized possession of firearms and careless storage of firearms. He was detained in custody.

Flood warning issued for parts of western Manitoba

A flood warning has been issued for parts of western Manitoba as forecasters predict heavy rain over the next few days.

Widespread rainfall amounts of 60 to 100 millimetres are possible in areas including the upper Assiniboine River and its tributaries in Manitoba, the Shellmouth Reservoir (Lake of the Prairies) watershed, the Little Saskatchewan, Birdtail, Valley, Vermilion, Shell and Swan river basins, and the Parkland region, the provincial government said.

Rainfall totals could be higher if thunderstorms develop and persist over the same area.

The province said water levels on reservoirs and lakes, including the Shellmouth Reservoir, Rivers Dam (Lake Wahtopanah), Minnedosa Dam and Dauphin Lake, could rise by one to three feet over the next few days.

Water levels along rivers, creeks and drainage areas within the Assiniboine River basin and Parkland region could rise significantly over a short period, the province warned.

People who live in or visit the areas were told to be cautious because water levels may rise quickly and conditions could change with little notice. Avoid crossing flooded roads or fast-moving water, the province said.

Vacant house blaze doused

Firefighters extinguished a fire at a vacant and boarded-up home Sunday night on Maryland Street.

Crews were called to the West End fire at 8:55 p.m. When they arrived, they found smoke and flames coming from the house.

Firefighters had the blaze under control about 45 minute later. No injuries were reported.

Teen killed in rollover near Lorette

A 17-year-old from Dufresne is dead following a single-vehicle rollover near Lorette.

St. Pierre-Jolys RCMP said officers were called to Highway 405 at about 6:45 a.m. Sunday after receiving a report of an SUV that had gone into the ditch and rolled over.

Police believe the crash occurred sometime overnight and was not discovered until daylight. The vehicle was heavily damaged, and after searching the area, officers located the driver inside the SUV, concealed by the damage.

The teen was pronounced dead at the scene.

RCMP continue to investigate.

Daudrich quits PC party

Longtime Progressive Conservative party board member and leadership candidate Wally Daudrich is leaving the party.

“I am by my nature a very loyal person and I have now concluded that while I would never quit the conservative movement, the PC Party has completely abandoned me and all conservatives like me,” Daudrich said in a letter sent Saturday to the PC party leadership obtained by the Free Press.

“I understand that you are moving away from conservative values in the hopes of a better outcome at the ballot box; I suggest to you that this direction is wrong and ill-advised,” wrote the controversial and outspoken Daudrich. The Churchill resort owner, who also has a home near the Turtle Mountain constituency, narrowly lost the PC leadership last year to Obby Khan after receiving more votes in the contest that used a weighted point system.

He was informed by the party earlier this month that he would not be allowed to seek the nomination in the conservative stronghold of Turtle Mountain for failing to meet “certain conditions during the vetting process.”

Daudrich said in his letter to the party leadership that he’s had enough.

“Conservatives such as myself deserve a political home, and unfortunately it appears to me that the PC Party of Manitoba no longer represents the conservative community… I no longer believe that my goals can be achieved through an association with the PC Party of Manitoba.”

Cross Lake RCMP investigate suspicious death after woman’s body found

Cross Lake RCMP are investigating a suspicious death after a 22-year-old woman was found unresponsive in the water near Beardy’s Point in Pimicikamak Cree Nation on Sunday evening.

Police said officers were called to the area just before 7 p.m., where the woman had been pulled from the water. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

RCMP said the death is being treated as suspicious, pending the results of an autopsy.

Investigators are asking anyone with information about the death to contact Cross Lake RCMP at 204-676-2600 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477 or online.

Cross Lake RCMP and RCMP Forensic Identification Services continue to investigate.

Tornado touches down near Rossburn

Environment Canada has confirmed a tornado touched down near Rossburn Sunday evening.

The storm touched ground around 7:30 p.m. said meteorologist Brian Proctor. The storm also recorded significant wind gusts, with wind blowing 85 km/h at Shoal Lake and 100 km/h at Somerset throughout the evening.

Rossburn deputy mayor Adam Grabowski said two homes were damaged in the storm, but no one was home at the time and there have been no reported injuries.

Rossburn is located about 300 kilometres west of Winnipeg.
