RM of Dauphin declares state of emergency

The RM of Dauphin has declared a state of emergency after heavy rain has caused widespread flooding throughout the area.

Dauphin has received approximately 115 millimetres of rain since June 28, with more still falling. The rain has overwhelmed stormwater and wastewater systems, leading to flooding on roads and private properties and putting significant strain on local infrastructure.

Officials are urging residents to avoid non-essential travel due to flooded roads and hazardous conditions, and to stay away from standing water, which can worsen flooding and create safety risks. Residents are also being asked to reduce water use to help ease pressure on the wastewater system. Dauphin’s Regional Health Centre has also been closed until further notice as a result of the flooding.

Crews are working to manage the response and protect critical infrastructure, while residents are advised to call 911 in life-threatening situations and to avoid entering flood-affected buildings where electrical hazards may exist.

Police arrest pair in downtown shooting

Two men have been arrested and charged in connection to a downtown shooting in March, Winnipeg police said in a Wednesday news release.

Police were called to the 200 block of Portage Avenue on March 8 around 3:45 a.m. for reports of gunshots. Two women and one man were in a parked vehicle downtown when two men approached and fired multiple shots into the vehicle, police say. One person was injured from shattered glass, but no one was shot.

Officers executed a search warrant on home on the 200 block of Johnson Avenue on June 23 and arrested one suspect. The second suspect was arrested later that day on the 1600 block of Regent Avenue West.

The men, aged 32 and 36, are facing various firearms and weapons charges. They have been detained in custody.

Jets add goalie in free agency

The Winnipeg Jets took a swing for a goalie on Day 1 of NHL free agency, agreeing to terms with Stuart Skinner on a two-year deal with an AAV of US $3.75 million.

Skinner, 27, went 23-17-9 last season with two shutouts, a 2.92 GAA and .899 save percentage for the Pittsburgh Penguins and Edmonton Oilers.

Skinner also has 53 playoff starts on his resume, including a pair of runs to the Stanley Cup final with the Oilers.

This move seems like more than insurance with the future of Connor Hellebuyck up in the air, but the Jets were already looking to add at least one goalie today since Eric Comrie is on the market as an unrestricted free agent.

Crews respond to fire in The Maples

A Canada Day house fire in The Maples is believed to be accidental, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service says.

Crews were called to a side-by-side home on the 200 block of Mapleglen Drive around 6:40 a.m. Firefighters extinguished the fire shortly after 7 a.m.

Three people were assessed on scene by paramedics and one was taken to hospital in stable condition.

No damage estimates are available.

Whyte Ridge tornado confirmed, categorized as EF1

The Northern Tornadoes Project has confirmed a tornado touched down in Winnipeg’s Whyte Ridge neighbourhood on Monday evening, giving the storm a preliminary EF1 rating.

A damage survey conducted by the project found a very narrow but clearly defined path of destruction. Impacts included roof damage to several homes, along with multiple trees being snapped and uprooted.

The Northern Tornadoes Project, a Canada-based research initiative that documents and verifies tornado occurrences using ground surveys and meteorological analysis, said additional details will be released once its full assessment is complete.

An EF1 tornado is a moderate-strength tornado with wind speeds of about 138-177 km/h. An EF1 tornado is the second-lowest rating on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, which ranges from EF0 (weakest) to EF5 (most extreme).

Man, 71, charged in armed robbery

Winnipeg police have arrested a 71-year-old man after a bank robbery in the Sturgeon Creek area Monday.

Police say the man went to a bank on the 3200 block of Portage Avenue around 10:30 a.m. and passed a note to an employee that contained demands and stated he was armed. He received property from the employee and fled in a taxicab, a Saturday news release states.

The man was arrested at a bar on the 1900 block of Portage Avenue. He has been charged with armed robbery using a firearm, possession of a scheduled substance and had a warrant for his arrest. He was detained.
