WFPS battle West End blaze Tuesday

Fire crews battled a blaze on Langside Street in Winnipeg’s West End neighbourhood on Tuesday afternoon.

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service said they responded to the fire in the 500 block of Langside just before 2 p.m., where they encountered heavy smoke billowing out of the home.

Crews were able to use an offensive attack, and had the fire under control by 2:38 p.m.

No injuries were reported and no damage estimates were available. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

WFPS warns public after medical response bag stolen

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service is warning the public after a medical response bag containing potentially dangerous medications was stolen from the scene of an emergency on Tuesday.

WFPS said none of the medications in the bag are narcotics, but taking any of them without medical supervision could prove dangerous or even fatal.

Most of the medications are used to relieve symptoms or during patient resuscitation and are intended to be administered intravenously. They are packaged in vials and are not meant to be taken orally.

The theft has been reported to the Winnipeg Police Service. Anyone with information about the missing bag or its contents is asked to contact police at 204-986-6222.

The WFPS is also investigating the incident.

New council candidate in Transcona

A community centre leader hopes to become the next city councillor for Transcona.

Lora Meseman, executive director of the General Council of Winnipeg Community Centres, registered to become a candidate on Tuesday.

“I grew up in Transcona, graduated, raised my family in Transcona and I volunteered for well over 20 years there,” Meseman said. “I’ve been part of the community and giving to the community.”

She said running for city councillor “feels like the right thing to do.”

She has been the executive director of the community centres council for five years, after serving on its board from 2008 to 2021. Meseman said that experience taught her improving infrastructure is a key priority at city hall.

“Because of community centres, we understand that there isn’t enough funding for infrastructure and that’s right across the board… I feel strongly that community needs places to gather and community centres are a great place to do that,” she said.

Chris Giesbrecht, Shawn Nason and Nathine Dagdick have also registered for the race to become Transcona’s next city councillor. Current Transcona Coun. Russ Wyatt has not confirmed if he will seek re-election.

The election will take place on Oct. 28.

Fire closes Walmart at St. Vital Centre

A Walmart at St. Vital Centre was evacuated Monday night after a fire inside the store.

“We are thankful that all Walmart staff and visitors were evacuated safely, everyone was accounted for, and no one was injured,” the shopping centre said in a social media post. “St. Vital Centre continues to work closely with Walmart, the Winnipeg Police Service, and the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service to assist in any way we can.”

St. Vital Centre staff said Tuesday morning the Walmart store has not re-opened, and it did not know when it would.

The WFPS said in a news release emergency crews were called to a commercial building in the 1200 block of St. Mary’s Road just after 7 p.m. Monday. Firefighters quickly put out the fire after the building’s sprinkler system mostly extinguished the blaze before crews arrived.

No injuries were reported. A damage estimate was not immediately available and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Woman dies in Whiteshell motorcycle crash

A 56-year-old Steinbach woman died in a motorcycle crash in Whiteshell Provincial Park on Sunday.

RCMP said the woman was riding with a group when her motorcycle lost control on Highway 44’s eastbound lane, near Provincial Road 312, and flipped in the south ditch at about 5:30 p.m.

The woman was taken to hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
