Man struck crossing Trans-Canada on ATV ticketed

A Macgregor man who had to be airlifted to hospital after he was struck when driving an all-terrain vehicle across the Trans-Canada Highway last month has been ticketed.

RCMP from the Portage la Prairie detachment raced to to the collision between a vehicle and ATV on the highway, near Road 71 West, at about 9:45 a.m. on July 23.

Mounties learned the ATV driver crossed the highway and was hit by the east-bound vehicle.

STARS air ambulance took the ATV driver, a 66-year-old man, to a hospital in Winnipeg. He wasn’t wearing a helmet, but was in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries, RCMP say. The other driver, a 67-year-old man, wasn’t hurt.

The ATV driver has been issued several tickets under the Highway Traffic Act and Off-Road Vehicles Act for driving an unregistered vehicle, proceeding before it’s safe, driving while disqualified, operating an off-road vehicle on or across a road, and failing to wear a helmet.

ATVs cannot be legally operated on roadways in Manitoba, though off-roaders with valid driver’s licences are allowed to cross over roads on ATVs.

Police search for person of interest in theft of fundraisers’ bikes

City police are asking for the public’s help identifying a person of interest amid an ongoing investigation into the theft of two bicycles, stolen last month from a pair of New Brunswick men who stopped in Winnipeg while cycling across Canada in support of mental health awareness.

Thomas Clark and Valentin Duquenne previously told the Free Press they were devastated after the bikes went missing outside CBC Manitoba’s headquarters, on July 24.

Valued at $15,000 to $20,000, the bikes — Trek and Cannondale models — were locked on a rack on the back of a support car that was parked on Young Street, just south of Portage Avenue, when the theft happened at about 7:40 a.m. on July 24. The lock had been cut.

Photos released by police on Wednesday show a man standing near two bicycles mounted to the back of a white sedan. Another photo shows the same man riding one of the bikes while holding the second.

Winnipeggers rallied to raise nearly $16,000 in just a few days to replace the mens’ bikes, and they’ve since carried on their route west.

First Nations safety officer helps respond to break-in on Sapotaweyak Cree Nation

Mounties arrested a 33-year-old man on Sapotaweyak Cree Nation last week after receiving reports that someone had broken into an empty home in the First Nation, located north of Swan River.

Police received a report of a residential break-and-enter at the home shortly after 9 a.m. on July 29, Manitoba RCMP said in a news release Wednesday.

According to the release, a community member phoned the homeowner to warn them someone had entered his house while he was away, prompting a second call to a First Nations Safety officer who responded to the scene.

The suspect left the home with the safety officer to meet with RCMP. He was arrested without incident and charged with break and enter and failure to comply with a probation order.

Youth arrested after vehicle collides with home, sparks fire in Rapid City

Manitoba RCMP have charged a 14-year-old boy after a suspect crashed a truck into a home in Rapid City last week and then fled the scene.

Mounties from the Minnedosa detachment received reports of the collision around 9:45 p.m. on July 29. Investigators learned a truck had struck the home’s garage, downing a nearby hydro wire and causing a small fire beneath the vehicle, RCMP said in a news release Wednesday.

The homeowner was inside the residence at the time, but was unharmed. The occupants of the truck fled the scene, RCMP said.

Police located a suspect minutes later at a nearby home and arrested a boy. A 14-year-old boy is charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000. Investigators have identified one other youth suspect, and charges against the second youth are pending, the release said.

Teenager arrested after Mounties stop speeding, swerving, stolen vehicle

Mounties arrested a 15-year-old boy last week after spotting a stolen vehicle “travelling at an alarming rate” and “veering in and out of the passing lane” in Headingley, shortly before the morning rush hour.

Officers stopped the vehicle around 7:45 a.m. on July 30, after it was recorded travelling nearly 120 kilometres per hour in a 70 km/hr zone on Highway 1 east, near Camp Manitou Road. The vehicle came to a stop on Portage Avenue, and the driver was arrested, Manitoba RCMP said in a news release Wednesday.

“The teen, from Winnipeg, provided two breath samples for alcohol impairment and failed a drug test for THC. He also did not possess a driver’s license,” the release said.

Further investigation revealed the vehicle involved in the traffic stop had been reported as stolen, RCMP said.

The suspect was issued $1,100 in tickets under the Highway Traffic Act, and was also charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, possessing break-in equipment and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

He was released from custody on a youth appearance notice, police said.
