Province to fog for mosquitoes in Morden, Boissevain-Morton

After finding evidence of mosquitoes with West Nile virus in more rural communities, the province will spray them for mosquitoes.
Spraying will begin in Morden, along with an approximate three-kilometre radius into the Rural Municipality of Stanley, and in the municipality of Boissevain-Morton, within an approximate 3.5-kilometre radius of the intersection of Highway 10 and North Railway Street in the community of Boissevain.
According to a bulletin issued by the province Thursday, the specific dates for fogging will be shared with both communities and posted on the province’s website.
The rural municipality of West St. Paul and Stonewall are set to be sprayed Friday, and the town of Carman is scheduled for spraying on Saturday, dependent on weather. Several Winnipeg neighbourhoods were sprayed between July 31 and Aug. 5; no further spraying is planned.
The insecticide DeltaGard 20EW will be used; it’s applied using vehicle-mounted ground sprayers in the evening and overnight, when mosquites are most active. It kills mosquitos by direct contact.
There have been no confirmed cases of West Nile virus in Manitoba so far this year.
Drugs seized from Stony Mountain prison

Corrections staff at Stony Mountain prison north of Winnipeg have seized packages containing contraband and unauthorized items.
The Correctional Service of Canada said Thursday that on July 28, and Aug. 1 and 3, staff found methamphetamine, THC concentrate, THC butter, Nicorette patches, and one cellphone. The total estimated institutional value of this seizure is $146,950.
Staff notified police and the institution is investigating.
The service uses ion scanners and drug-detector dogs to search buildings, personal property, inmates, and visitors.
The service said it is increasing measures to stop drugs and other contraband from getting inside the prison.
It has established a telephone tip line for federal institutions in which security concerns, such as drug trafficking, can be reported.
Accused killer in RCMP custody

RCMP have apprehended a 22-year-old Winnipeg man in connection with the slaying of a 42-year-old in Pimicikamak Cree Nation on July 31.
Officers picked up Brennan Rudolph on Wednesday. He is charged with second-degree murder and remains in police custody.
RCMP say Mounties were alerted by First Nation safety officers about a seriously injured individual on the main road in Pimicikamak.
Officers found two males, one of whom had a gun shot wound and was dead.
The other male was not harmed.
The accused is known to the victims.
