Training grenade found in Red River by Selkirk fisherman

A man out fishing on the waterfront in Selkirk Thursday hooked what turned out to be a training grenade, RCMP say.

Selkirk RCMP were called about the incident just after 3 p.m. and spoke with the man, who had hooked the grenade and pulled it from the water.

The RCMP explosives disposal unit called for Canadian Armed Forces officials at 17 Wing to check out the apparent grenade. Those officials analyzed the item and determined it was a training grenade dating to the 1950s and said it could be safely transported for disposal.

Anyone who finds what appears to be an explosive device should not touch, move or disturb it, and instead go somewhere safe to call police, RCMP said.

Police probe assault on bus driver

Winnipeg police have confirmed investigators from the major crimes unit are looking into an assault against a city transit driver early Wednesday.

The Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release the driver was assaulted with a weapon while operating a bus in the area of Isabel Street and William Avenue around 1:20 a.m.

Responding officers learned a passenger had become disruptive after being asked to pay the fare. Before the passenger exited the bus, the driver was stabbed in the lower body with an unknown object, police said.

On Wednesday, the drivers union said the operator had been stabbed with a syringe and it called for full shields to be installed on buses. Currently, partial shields are in place.

Nearly $1M seized in RCMP traffic stop outside Brandon

RCMP seized nearly $1 million in cash during a traffic stop of two Ontario men just outside Brandon late last month.

An RCMP traffic officer was patrolling westbound on Highway 1 just before 9 p.m. on July 31, when they spotted a fast-moving vehicle headed east. Radar recorded the vehicle travelling nearly 130 kilometres an hour in a 100 km/h zone.

RCMP pulled the vehicle over near Brandon. Inside, officers found multiple bags stuffed full of approximately $970,000 in cash. The driver and passenger were arrested and taken to the Minnedosa RCMP detachment.

Alireza Haghood, 22, of Toronto, and Ahmad Ahmadi, 44, of Stouffville, Ont., are both charged with possession of property obtained by crime for the purpose of trafficking over $5,000.

Nearly 3,000 cartons of contraband cigarettes seized from Sherbrook Street suite

Winnipeg police seized about 600,000 contraband cigarettes from a Sherbrook Street suite on Wednesday.

Winnipeg Police Service patrol officers were investigating an unrelated incident at the residence on the 600 block of Sherbrook at about 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, when they spotted “a large quantity of illegal tobacco products,” police said on Friday.

Property crime investigators then obtained a warrant to search the suite. As officers secured the suite, waiting for the warrant to be issued, a suspect returned and was arrested.

Early on Wednesday, investigators searched the suite and found nearly 3,000 cartons of cigarettes — amounting to about 600,000 individual smokes — and $1,500 in cash.

A 36-year-old man is facing charges of possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000 and trafficking in contraband tobacco. Police released him on an undertaking ahead of a court date.

Vacant house on Magnus Avenue burns early Friday

Winnipeg firefighters doused a blaze in a vacant house on Magnus Avenue early Friday morning.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service crews, called to the one-and-a-half storey house just after 6 a.m., found smoke and flames coming from the structure when they arrived.

Firefighters got the fire under control by just before 6:40 a.m. Crews searched the building to confirm no one was inside.

The fire department says the house had previously been damaged in a fire in October 2023.
