Unclear if employee info compromised in HSC hack
5:49 PM
The Health Sciences Centre has retained experts and informed law enforcement about an ongoing ransomware incident at the hospital, but said it’s too early to determine if the personal information of employees has been compromised.
Shared Health provided an update Friday and said the attack, discovered Monday, has resulted in the closure of its security office, where IDs are issued and modified, and also affected a system monitoring the facility’s HVAC. However, it did not affect operations.
The update said the HSC remains secure, and while it’s too early to determine whether or not personal information has been affected, if it becomes known, those compromised will be informed immediately and be provided with recommended next steps.
The update said safeguarding information is a key priority.
Overland flood warning issued for southwestern Manitoba
3:28 PM
The province has issued an overland flood watch for portions of southwestern Manitoba as significant rain falls in the region.
Forecasts estimate rainfall totals of 20 to 40 millimetres across much of southwestern Manitoba, extending north toward the Dauphin area. The heaviest rainfall is expected west of Brandon, including the Virden and Melita areas, and could extend westward into the Saskatchewan portion of the Souris River basin. These areas could receive 50 to 80 mm of rainfall, with localized amounts potentially reaching 100 to 120 mm.
An additional 20 to 50 mm of rainfall is possible through the remainder of Friday in areas affected by heavier precipitation.
The overland flood watch remains in effect for southwestern Manitoba until the precipitation system clears the region overnight.
Man charged in hit and run
3:00 PM
A man has been charged with a hit and run after a school-aged child was seriously injured Thursday in West Kildonan.
A 2025 Dodge Ram hit a child who was riding a bike on a sidewalk in front of a housing complex on the 500 block of North Point Boulevard at about 5:30 p.m., the Winnipeg Police Service said in a Friday news release.
The child was struck by the front bumper of the truck as it was coming out of a parking lot and the driver fled before police were called, the release said.
The child was taken to hospital in unstable condition but was later upgraded to stable.
A 29-year-old man was arrested at his residence and faces charges of dangerous operation of a conveyance causing bodily harm and failure to stop at the scene of an accident.
He was released on an appearance notice with a court date.
Temporary changes coming to Plessis Road during construction
2:00 PM
Temporary traffic changes will come into effect next week as construction on Plessis Road continues.
Starting 7 a.m. on Monday until Aug. 21:
- Plessis will be fully closed in both directions between the CN main approach / Autumn Way and Camiel Sys Street
- There will be no southbound traffic between Camiel Sys Street and Dugald Road
- Northbound traffic will remain open in this portion
- Two-way traffic will be temporarily restored between Fermor Avenue and the CN main approach / Autumn Way (this portion is currently northbound only)
Drivers should plan ahead, use alternate routes, and anticipate delays in the area, the city said in a news release.
The road will revert to northbound-only traffic only at 7 p.m. on Aug. 21. Normal traffic operations should resume later this year when construction is complete.
Drivers are encouraged to download the Waze app for real-time traffic and incident updates.
Major traffic disruption this weekend at St. Anne’s Road and Abinojii Mikanah
10:57 AM
The city is warning of major traffic disruptions this weekend, as it paves a busy south Winnipeg intersection.
“Traffic movements will be very limited” where St. Anne’s Road and Abinojii Mikanah meet, with many vehicles rerouted, a city press release warns.
From 6 a.m. Saturday to 6 p.m. Sunday, northbound and southbound St. Anne’s traffic will be diverted to Abinojii Mikanah, with no left turns or through travel allowed.
Through traffic on westbound and eastbound Abinojii Mikanah will be limited to one lane each, with no left turns permitted onto St. Anne’s. Vehicles travelling along Abinojii will be able to turn right.
Drivers are advised to use alternate routes and anticipate delays in the area.
Man charged with luring and sexually assaulting teen
10:03 AM
A Winnipeg man is facing multiple charges after police say he lured a teen online and sexually assaulted them.
In July the Winnipeg Police Service’s child exploitation unit received a report that a youth had been sexually assaulted by a man. Investigators learned that between June 20 and July 10 the suspect allegedly communicated with the teen online and arranged to meet with them in person on several occasions. During those meetings, the teen was given gifts and alcohol and was sexually assaulted.
On July 16 investigators arrested David Wayne Thornson, 41, at a home in Headingley. Thornson has been charged with sexual assault, sexual interference, obtaining sexual services from a person under 18 years of age and luring a person under 16 years of age by means of telecommunication.
Thornson was released on a Crown consent court order prohibiting contact with individuals under 18.
