Goldeyes split two-game series with Monarchs

The Winnipeg Goldeyes and Kansas City Monarchs met at Blue Cross Park once again to finish what they started the night before and begin game two of the series.

After another tied up inning, 5-5, the game proceeded into a tenth. Pitcher Derrick Cherry kept the Monarch’s at their current score while Keshawn Lynch singled on a line drive bringing Ramón Bramasco home, concluding the game 6-5.

Game two began after a quick break before the players hit the pitch a second time.

The Monarchs opened up the scoring in the top of the third and continued to increase their lead with two more runs in the fourth inning, 3-0.

In the same inning, shortstop Peyton Holt hit a bloop to right field where Lynch ran from second base to home, 3-1.

With a Monarchs home run early in the sixth, the Goldeyes increased their deficit by three – but that didn’t stick for long with two runs in the bottom by Lynch and Holt.

The Goldeyes ultimately fell short with the Monarchs taking the win 8-3. The third game of the series will begin Aug. 26 in Blue Cross Park, first pitch at 6:30pm.

13-year-old girl riding scooter hit by car

A 13-year-old girl was taken to hospital on Tuesday evening after she was hit by a car crossing Jefferson Avenue on a scooter.

Family members on scene told the Free Press the child was travelling north on a multi-use trail and was hit by a car travelling westbound on Jefferson Avenue at a crosswalk. They said while one car stopped at the crossing, a second car in the next lane did not, striking the child as a result.

The family member, who did not want their name published to protect the identity of the child, said they were waiting for an update on the girl’s condition, saying she was tossed roughly 10-feet when she was hit.

On scene police were keeping an eye on a badly-damaged scooter and a car with a smashed windshield.

The Winnipeg Police Service did not immediately respond to a request for information on Tuesday evening.

Polar bear killed by paddler near Hudson Bay coast

Manitoba wildlife officials are investigating after a polar bear was shot and killed near the mouth of the Seal River on Friday by a paddler, the province said. 

The incident occurred along the Hudson Bay coast roughly 50 kilometres west of Churchill.

Polar bears are designated as a threatened species in Manitoba and are protected under provincial legislation. The province does not allow a polar bear hunt.

Few details about the shooting have been released. Officials have not publicly identified the paddler involved or provided information about the circumstances leading up to the encounter.

Convicted sex offender jailed in Alberta expected to take residence in Winnipeg

Police are warning the public that a man who was jailed after a violent sexual assault is expected to live in Winnipeg after he was released Monday.

James Joseph O’Kane, 35, is considered at high risk to reoffend, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a press release Tuesday.

In October 2016, O’Kane attacked a woman, dragged her into an alley, and sexually assaulted her. He choked and threatened to kill the woman, who was a stranger to him, and he was armed with a knife. He was charged with a number of offences, including sexual assault causing bodily harm and forcible confinement, and was convicted on May 31, 2021. He was sentenced to five years and 322 days, after spending over 13 months in custody before his sentencing.

He was released from the Bowden Institution in Alberta on Monday. He is subject to the conditions of his parole and a lifetime weapons ban. Despite receiving treatment programming while incarcerated, he is considered at high risk of reoffending in a sexual manner against adult women.

O’Kane is described as Indigenous, six feet tall and 266 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. He has a tattoo on his right forearm that says “LIFE.”
