Goldeyes take game three against Monarchs 11-6

With the Winnipeg Goldeyes and Kansas City Monarchs 1-1 in the series, tensions were high for game three – both sides eager for the win.

Pitcher Aidan Newton had a rough start with the Monarchs first batter hitting a double and the second batter hitting a homer in the first inning – Kansas City taking the lead early, 2-0.

Roby Enríquez decided to change that in the bottom of the second, hitting a double line drive to center field with Raphaël Pelletier and Max Murphy running home. Enríquez crossed home plate himself after a single from Peyton Holt, taking the lead 3-2.

From there, the Fish continued to climb the ladder. Designated hitter Noah Marcelo hit a triple where Ray-Patrick Didder was able to run from first base to home plate.

Max Murphy scored a run off a sacrifice fly, pushing their score to 5-2 in the bottom of the fourth.

The Monarchs scored a run in the fifth, but Marcelo did them one better, hitting a double ground ball to left field sending Ramón Bramasco home.

The Goldeyes loaded up the bases in the seventh inning more than once, resulting in three more runs. They ultimately took home the win, 11-6.

The final game of the series will take place Aug. 27, 6:30pm at Blue Cross Park.

‘Major milestone’ for sewage plant

The first of three phases for the $3.1-billion North End sewage treatment plant upgrade is now complete.

The headworks facilities are now operating, which the city announced as a “major milestone” Wednesday.

In a news release, water and waste officials described the facility as the “first stop” for wastewater entering the plant, where large debris and grit are removed and odour control begins.

“We use a specific kind of bacteria to eat the smelly compounds first,” the release notes.

While nearby residents may notice odours, the city expects the growth of that bacteria to reduce the smell within a “short” period of time.

The overall upgrade is the most expensive infrastructure project in the City of Winnipeg’s history.

Its second phase will create biosolids facilities that treat solids in sewage, which the city expects to begin construction on “in the coming weeks.”

The third phase will create nutrient removal facilities that treat liquids in wastewater before they enter the river, greatly reducing pollution that fuels algae growth.

The upgrade will also increase Winnipeg’s sewage treatment capacity and ensure development can continue.

Two men charged in robbery after shot fired in Gunton

One man turned himself in on robbery charges after a police chase while another suspect fell through his attic in an attempt to evade officers, RCMP say.

Police had been on the lookout for two men accused of stealing a truck at gunpoint and firing a shot at a home in Gunton on Aug. 19.

Officers learned two men pulled up to a residence and attempted to steal a truck parked on the driveway. A 39-year-old man came outside of the home and was confronted by one of the suspects, police said. The suspect struck the man in the arm with the weapon and then shot a bullet in the ground close to him.

The suspect returned to the stolen truck and drove away while his partner fled in the truck the two arrived in.

Police had asked the public for help finding the two men.

Officers found and charged both men, RCMP said in a Wednesday news release.

RCMP spotted a truck Sunday evening that matched the description of one that was involved in the Gunton incident. When officers approached the vehicle, inside a barn at a property in the Rural Municipality of Rosser, the truck fled north onto Highway 7.

RCMP chased the suspect but eventually gave up, concerned for public safety.

About an hour later, RCMP were told the truck had lost control at an intersection in the RM of Armstrong and two people fled the vehicle on foot. At least one was wearing a ghillie suit, a large camouflage outfit used in hunting. RCMP, including the police dog unit, searched the area without success.

The following day, Wade Wright, 31, turned himself in at the Gimli detachment. He faces several charges, including robbery with a firearm and unauthorized possession of a firearm.

Hours later, RCMP executed a warrant at a home in Gimli. A man was hiding in the attic but fell through the ceiling while officers were searching for him. He ran outside and was taken into custody following a struggle with police. He was treated in hospital for a bite from a police dog.

Mackenzie Sabel, 30, faces multiple charges including discharging a firearm, possession of a restricted firearm, robbery with a firearm and resisting arrest.

The handgun believed to be used in the Gunton incident was recovered by officers. It was reported stolen from a store in South Carolina in 2018.

Both men remain in custody.

Two arrests made in theft of charity cyclists’ bikes

Winnipeg police have arrested two men in connection with the theft of two high-end bicycles belonging to a pair of New Brunswick cyclists who were crossing Canada to raise awareness and funds for men’s mental health.

The bicycles, valued at about $15,000, were stolen July 24 from a vehicle parked in the 400 block of Portage Avenue while Thomas Clark and Valentin Duquenne were inside CBC Manitoba for a media interview.

Police said one of the stolen bicycles was recovered Aug. 7 after officers spotted a 60-year-old man riding it in the 1800 block of Bannatyne Avenue West. He was arrested and charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000 before being released on an appearance notice. The bicycle was returned to its owner.

Investigators later identified a suspect in the theft and learned the bicycles had been traded to the 60-year-old man and another unidentified male.

On Aug. 23, officers arrested 42-year-old Kuol Thomas Madit at the intersection of Notre Dame Avenue and Balmoral Street. Madit has been charged with two counts of theft over $5,000, trafficking in property obtained by crime over $5,000, possession of fentanyl and failing to comply with probation. He was detained in custody.

The second bicycle has not been recovered.

Clark and Duquenne, both from Moncton, N.B., completed a more than 6,000-kilometre cycling journey across Canada on Aug. 11 as part of their “Men Don’t Ride Alone” fundraiser for men’s mental health initiatives.

Security guard stabbed during Portage Avenue Dollarama robbery

A 22-year-old security guard is in stable condition after being stabbed during a robbery at a west Winnipeg Dollarama Tuesday afternoon, police say.

Winnipeg police were called to the retail store at 2727 Portage Ave. in the Courts of St. James around 4 p.m. after receiving reports a security guard had been stabbed.

Police said the guard confronted a man suspected of shoplifting and directed him to leave the store. The man allegedly pulled out a sharp-edged weapon and stabbed the guard in the upper body before fleeing with stolen merchandise.

Officers found the guard seriously injured. He was taken to hospital in unstable condition and was later upgraded to stable.

The suspect fled before officers arrived and no arrests have been made. The major crimes unit continues to investigate.
