Man charged after indecent acts in southeast Manitoba

A 31-year-old man was arrested in Landmark after RCMP said he committed several indecent acts in southeastern Manitoba.

Kevin Hiebert-Harder has been charged with four counts of indecent acts and being disguised with intent to commit an offence after the incidents, which occurred on Aug. 27., RCMP said in a news release Friday

In each incident, victims reported to be walking or standing at the side of the road when a man in an older-model vehicle stopped, or slowed down, and then exposed himself and committed an indecent act, RCMP said.

Several incidents were reported over the course of the day, happening on or near Carriere Road and Road 34 North in the Rural Municipality of La Broquerie. As well as on Southeast Drive in Richer, Albert Avenue in Grunthal, and on Road 34 North of Wolf Drive West, also in the RM.

On Tuesday, officers arrested Hiebert-Harder at a home in Landmark without incident.

He was released on conditions with a court appearance in October.

StandardAero campus expansion complete

StandardAero has completed its 70,000 sq. ft. facility expansion.

The new space allows for more maintenance and support work on GE Aerospace CF34-3/8 and CFM International CFM56-7B engines at its campus near the Winnipeg Richardson International Airport.

The Manitoba government had tabbed $3 million for the expansion.

Man dead, several people injured in two Tuesday collisions: RCMP

A man is dead and several people were left injured after two separate collisions involving semi-trucks outside Winnipeg within hours of each other on Tuesday.

Headingley RCMP were called to both collisions.

The first occurred between two semi-trucks on the westbound lane of Highway 1, near Road 11 West, in the Rural Municipality of Cartier, at about 2 p.m. Tuesday.

A semi-truck travelling west struck another semi that was parked on the shoulder. The parked truck caught fire upon the impact, while the other truck was heavily damaged.

The driver of the parked truck, a 56-year-old woman from La Broquerie, wasn’t hurt. The driver of the other truck, a 43-year-old man from Winnipeg, was treated for minor injuries. His passenger, a 27-year-old man, wasn’t hurt. The 43-year-old was ticketed for driving carelessly, RCMP say.

At 6 p.m., Headingley RCMP were called to a head-on collision on Highway 2, just west of the intersection with Highway 3, in the RM of Macdonald.

Mounties learned that an SUV, headed east on Highway 2, suddenly veered into oncoming traffic and collided with a semi-truck. The SUV driver, a 25-year-old man from Winnipeg, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The semi driver, a 32-year-old man, and his passenger, a 28-year-old man, were treated for minor injuries at the scene.

RCMP are still investigating both collisions.

Police to bolster presence on transit as kids return to school

The Winnipeg Police Service will be beefing up its presence on and around city transit routes as students return to school next week.

Police say uniformed officers will be riding on Winnipeg Transit buses and patrolling near transit stops, including bus shelters and stations, along major routes that kids use to take to school and in the city’s core, beginning on Sept. 8.

September brings an increase in transit ridership as kids return to school and workers return from summer holidays, police say.

The plan to bolster police presence is part of the force’s ongoing bus safety initiative, police say.

Several roads to close downtown Sunday for Sikh religious procession

Several roads will be closed downtown on Sunday to accommodate a Sikh religious procession.

The annual Nagar Kirtan will see Memorial Boulevard closed between York Avenue and Broadway, York from Osborne Street North to Memorial Boulevard, and Broadway from Osborne to Kennedy Street, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday.

Then York from Memorial to Garry Street, Garry from York to Broadway, and westbound  Broadway from Garry to Memorial, will be closed for about two hours beginning around 12:45 p.m.

City officials warn drivers to plan alternate routes and to expect delays in the area.
