Subway owner becomes 14th candidate for mayor

A franchise business owner is the 14th candidate to register in the race to become Winnipeg’s next mayor.

Gagandeep Bawa, 45, said he has owned a downtown Subway franchise for five years, and believes more work is needed to address safety concerns in the area.

Bawa said robberies and thefts have led some businesses to move out, showing more support is needed. If elected, he would push for a greater security presence, such as more Downtown Community Safety Partnership or Exchange District BIZ patrols.

Bawa said he would also attempt to create water bill rebates for seniors and single parents.

Incumbent mayoral candidate Scott Gillingham, Christopher Clacio, Mike Vogiatzakis, Umar Hayat, Mazher Alam, Don Woodstock, Joshua Pagdato, Johnny Calderon, Noah Redden, Zac Uminski, Brad Gross, Kevin Klein and Tracey Drexler have also registered to run.

To be listed on the ballot, candidates must also complete a nomination process by 4:30 p.m. Sept. 22. That includes obtaining signatures from 250 people on the voter’s list.

Election Day is Oct. 28.

Province issues shoreline wind alert along parts of Lake Manitoba, Lake Winnipeg

The province has issued a wind warning along the south basin of Lake Manitoba, as well as shorelines near Gimli on the west side and Victoria Beach on the east side of Lake Winnipeg.

Strong north to northwesterly winds are forecast across much of central and southern Manitoba from Monday into Tuesday with average wind speeds of 45 to 60 km/h, increasing to 65 to 75 km/h early Tuesday and gusts reaching 85 to 95 km/h, the province said in a Monday bulletin.

The winds may result in significant wind setup and wave action along the shorelines, with temporary water-level increases of five feet or more possible in the most affected areas.

Man arrested in Sandy Bay for brandishing makeshift firearm

A 27-year-old man is facing a slew of firearms charges after brandishing a firearm in Sandy Bay Ojibway First Nation.

On Saturday shortly before 2 p.m., the Manitoba First Nations Police Service received a call that a man was brandishing a makeshift firearm in the Sandy Bay townsite.

Officers located the suspect and took him into custody without incident. A backpack the suspect was wearing contained a “heavily modified” firearm. Police also learned the suspect was on court-ordered conditions not to possess a firearm.

The man has been charged with several firearms charges. He remains in custody.

Pepper spray and Taser used on suspect in Roseau River First Nation

A 28-year-old man was sent to hospital with minor injuries after Manitoba First Nations police used a Taser and pepper spray to subdue him during an arrest in Roseau River Anishinabe First Nation Saturday morning.

Around 9:40 a.m. MFNPS officers in Roseau River went to a home in the community to find a man with an active warrant for sexual assault-related charges. The man was found and, when he was told he was under arrest, he became agitated and combative, the MFNPS said in a news release.

The suspect physically resisted the two officers’ attempts to restrain him and became further agitated, so officers used pepper spray but it was unsuccessful. A Taser was then used and it was successful, but the suspect continued to be unco-operative.

Additional officers were dispatched to assist and eventually the suspect was secured in a police vehicle. The Taser caused minor injuries and the 28-year-old suspect was taken to hospital in Altona. He was processed and released back into police custody a short time later.

The suspect was charged with resisting arrest and disobeying court orders. He remains in custody.

Man charged following altercation at Neepawa convenience store

A Winnipeg man is facing more than a dozen criminal charges after backing into a police vehicle and attempting to flee the scene with a shotgun in a stolen vehicle in Neepawa.

On Sunday morning just after 3 a.m., Spruce Plains RCMP responded to a report of a possibly intoxicated man acting aggressively toward staff at a convenience store in Neepawa.

Officers arrived at the store on Main Street West and pulled up behind a parked truck that was believed to belong to the suspect. Moments later, the suspect began to back the truck into the police vehicle with the officer inside. The driver attempted to maneuver the truck around the police vehicle, ignoring police commands to stop. The truck then became boxed in the parking lot as more officers arrived at the scene.

The suspect exited the truck and was arrested. A search of the truck found a loaded sawed-off shotgun in the driver’s seat and an open can of alcohol. The suspect refused to provide a breath sample. Further investigation revealed the truck had been stolen.

The 18-year-old man is charged with 19 criminal offences ranging from assaulting a police officer to multiple firearms-related charges. He remains in custody.

The man was also ticketed for driving while disqualified and having open liquor inside a motor vehicle. The two tickets carry a combined fine of $909.

One dies in rollover near Steinbach

A 40-year-old man was found dead at the scene of a rollover near Steinbach Saturday night.

Just after 11:30 p.m. Steinbach RCMP responded to a single motor-vehicle collision on Road 21 N in the RM of Hanover. Officers located a man laying on the road behind the vehicle. The vehicle’s damage was consistent with being involved in a rollover.

The 40-year-old man from Steinbach was the lone occupant of the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. The investigation is ongoing.

Zebra mussel larvae detected in Lake Winnipegosis and Waterhen Lake

The province has launched its invasive species early detection response protocol after zebra mussel veligers, or larvae, have been found in Lake Winnipegosis and Waterhen Lake.

A local fisher reported zebra mussels attached to their boat in Lake Winnipegosis, according to a press release from the province sent Monday morning.

Analysis of veliger samples taken before the fisher’s report found the larvae in both lakes, which will be monitored in the next few weeks to determine the severity of the invasions.

Anyone using either lake will be required to decontaminate their watercraft and any water-related equipment before entering another body of water. Anyone transporting watercraft over land are required to stop at watercraft inspection stations, set up across Manitoba. The locations and opening hours of these stations can be found on the province of Manitoba’s website.

Police seize 175 cartons of contraband tobacco

A 27-year-old man is facing tobacco trafficking charges after police found unstamped cigarettes and cash in his vehicle.

Around 1:15 p.m. on Sept. 10, officers were patrolling the 1400 block of Portage Avenue when they saw a man transferring boxes from a Land Rover into another vehicle.

Officers recognized the boxes as contraband tobacco and also saw a large quantity of cash inside the vehicle. Officers discovered the other involved individual had purchased the unstamped cigarettes.

Officers arrested the suspect and seized 175 cartons of unstamped cigarettes, $3,750 in cash and the vehicle.

The 27-year-old is facing charges of trafficking in contraband tobacco, possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime under $5,000 and possessing more than 25 units of unmarked tobacco under the Tax Administration and Miscellaneous Taxes Act.

He was released on an appearance notice.
