Police charge man in random summer sexual assault, robbery in Winnipeg
9:23 AM
A 20-year-old man has been charged with sexually assaulting a woman in a random attack that took place near Vimy Ridge Park on the evening of July 19.
City police announced in a release Thursday that investigators had identified a suspect — who was in custody at Headingley Correctional Institution on an unrelated matter — following a forensic analysis and made an arrest Tuesday.
The Winnipeg Police Service had previously put out an advisory to seek tips and security footage related to the incident that took place around 10:30 p.m. in the area of Canora Street and Picardy Place in central Winnipeg.
Police reported a woman had been grabbed by an unknown man after she crossed Portage Avenue south of Toronto Street near Picardy Place on the summer evening. The man threatened to harm her if she screamed and pulled her into a nearby alcove where he choked, sexually assaulted and robbed her, WPS said.
Adrian Logan Southwind has been charged with sexual assault and uttering threats.
