Time change officially comes to an end in Manitoba

The clocks will never fall back or spring forward in Manitoba again.

On Friday afternoon, Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew officially signed the proclamation that would permanently put Manitoba on daylight time.

Kinew announced the change last week after Manitobans provided feedback that time was up for the time change. In the style of U.S. President Donald Trump, he called the proclamation paperwork, “very big, very beautiful.”

“Let the record show in the history books, when you tell your great-great-grandkids when we stopped changing the clocks, that change happened right here in Selkirk,” Kinew said.

Continuing his impression of the President, the premier then turned the document toward the crowd, displaying his signature.

“Better not lose that,” he said jokingly. “That’s important.”

Most of the 72,000 votes submitted in an online EngageMB survey — 92 per cent — said they would like to see the practice end.

Stretch of Marion Street to close for weekend for rail work

Marion Street between Panet Road and Dupuy Avenue will be closed starting 7 p.m. tonight and will reopen by 6 a.m. Monday for rail crossing work.

Drivers should expect delays and seek alternate routes, the City of Winnipeg said in a news release Friday. Winnipeg Transit will be re-routed during the weekend closure.

Prolific offenders targeted in Dauphin

Eight people were arrested in Dauphin this week as part of a targeted operation focused on “prolific offenders,” RCMP say.

The arrests were made Sept. 18 and Tuesday and involved multiple Dauphin residents, including: a 33-year-old woman accused in a break and enter, a 48-year-old man accused of breaching curfew and other court-ordered conditions, a 22-year-old man accused in a robbery, a 35-year-old who police say breached court-ordered conditions banning him from a store he had previously shoplifted from, and a 28-year-old woman accused of breaching a release order.

A couple from Prince Albert, Sask., were also arrested after a theft at a Dauphin store — hours after they were released from custody over a weapons-related charge and other offences, RCMP said. A concealed weapon and “break-in instruments” were found on the couple, ages 27 and 25, police said. They face charges of theft, weapon possession, and failing to comply with a release order. A 37-year-old Brandon man faces charges of theft and resisting and obstructing a peace officer.

RCMP said the operation also included handing out several fines. Six people were ticketed for trespassing, two were ticketed for consuming alcohol in public, and several traffic tickets were issued.

Four charged in Lynn Lake death

Four people have been charged after a 72-year-old man died outside the RCMP detachment in Lynn Lake.

The victim was found seriously injured on the ground outside the detachment on Sunday morning, RCMP said in a news release earlier this week. Officers provided medical care, but the man died on scene.

RCMP said it is believed the victim managed to make his way to the detachment after being assaulted at his home.

On Friday, RCMP announced Lynn Lake residents Alfred Bighetty, 29, Wanda Holmes, 49, Justin Maniel, 26, and Kevin Maniel, 27, have been charged with assault causing bodily harm. They remain in custody.

Possible hepatitis A exposure in West Broadway

Manitoba health officials are warning of a possible exposure to hepatitis A at a Winnipeg church.

Anyone who was at the Crossways in Common building at 222 Furby St. from Aug. 14 to Sept. 23 is eligible for a free dose of the hepatitis A vaccine.

People who were at the West Broadway church and community service hub are encouraged to monitor for symptoms until Nov. 11.

An immunization clinic will be held at the 1JustCity West Broadway site within Crossways in Common on Oct. 1 from noon to 3 p.m.

Symptoms of hepatitis A — an acute liver infection — usually develop 14 to 28 days after exposure and can include fever, loss of appetite, tiredness, nausea and vomiting, and diarrhea.
