No injuries reported in Smith Street high-rise fire

No one was hurt in a downtown high-rise fire Saturday evening.

The fire, which happened just before 8:30 p.m. Sept. 26 in the 100 block of Smith Street, appears to have been caused by someone being inattentive while cooking inside their suite, the Winnipeg Fire and Paramedic Service stated in a news release Sunday.

Firefighters had the fire under control just before 9 p.m. It was contained to the suite where it started.

When the initial fire alarm went off, 911 dispatchers dispatched additional units to the scene because of the potential scale of the incident. Some occupants evacuated the building and some stayed in their suites, with most residents able to return once firefighters cleared smoke from the building.

Damage estimates were not available.

Jets place two on waivers

The Winnipeg Jets are one step closer to being down to numbers.

On Sunday afternoon, centre Danny Zhilkin and defenceman Henry Thrun were placed on waivers.

That decision would suggest  defenceman Tyrel Bauer is in line to break camp with the NHL club for the first time in his career.

The final roster, with a maximum of 23 players, must be submitted on Monday afternoon.

Charges laid after St. Boniface hospital assault

A man has been charged after a serious assault at St. Boniface Hospital on Saturday.

Just after 1 a.m. Sept. 26, two men were having an argument that escalated to a physical fight in which the victim sustained serious upper-body injuries, the Winnipeg Police Service stated in a news release Sunday.

When police arrived, a 36-year-old man was being detained by security personnel. The incident didn’t involve hospital staff and no one else was hurt, the release stated.

James Anthony Junior Clark, 36, was arrested and charged with assault causing bodily harm and two counts of violating a probation order.

He was detained in custody.
