Woman, 48, facing manslaughter charge after fatal assault

5:11 PM

A 48-year-old woman has been charged with manslaughter after a woman who was assaulted at a Young Street home last month died in hospital.

Winnipeg police said officers were called to a residence in the 100 block of Young Street at about 8:40 p.m. on Aug. 18, where they found a 57-year-old woman suffering from injuries sustained in an assault.

The woman was taken to hospital and initially stabilized, but her condition later deteriorated. She died Sept. 20.

Police identified the victim as Brenda Kate Cromarty, 57, a member of St. Theresa Point First Nation who had been living in Winnipeg.

The suspect had fled before officers arrived, police said.

The homicide unit identified 48-year-old Michelle Margaret Jane Robinson as a suspect and, following consultation with Manitoba Justice, a manslaughter charge was authorized. Robinson was arrested Sept. 25 in northern Manitoba by members of the Manitoba Integrated Violent Offenders Apprehension Unit.

She has been charged with manslaughter and remains in custody.

RCMP seek suspect after woman assaulted, robbed in Thompson

3:29 PM

RCMP are searching for a 39-year-old man after a woman was assaulted with a knife and had her vehicle stolen during a robbery in Thompson last week.

Police were called to a home in the northern Manitoba city shortly after 10 p.m. Friday, where they found a 36-year-old woman on the front porch suffering from serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigators believe three masked men arrived at the residence, two of whom assaulted the woman with a knife. All three fled in her vehicle, which police later found abandoned at another home.

The woman was taken to hospital in stable condition.

Police have issued an arrest warrant for Donald Massan, 39, who faces charges of aggravated assault, robbery with a weapon, disguise with intent and motor vehicle theft involving violence.

Massan is described as six feet two inches tall with a heavy build. Police believe he remains in the Thompson area. The identities of the other two suspects remain unknown.

RCMP warn the public not to approach the suspects. Anyone with information is asked to call Thompson RCMP at 204-677-6909 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477.

Donald Massan, 39, is wanted by RCMP.

Stuffies left behind at Teddy Bears’ Picnic

1:25 PM

The good news is all teddy bears made it home safely after Sunday’s 37th annual Teddy Bears’ Picnic at Assiniboine Park.

The bad news is some other friends — including a Ms. Rachel doll and a bespectacled Spider-Man — are looking for their owners.

More than 30,000 people came out for the event and more than 2,000 “patients” received care at the Dr. Goodbear Clinic.

Several of those stuffies were accidentally left behind and the Children’s Hospital Foundation “has been keeping them safe and sound while they wait to be claimed,” a news release said Monday.

Other items left behind include a vehicle key fob, a child’s jacket, some kid travel cups, and several pairs of glasses.

Anyone looking for items can contact the Children’s Hospital Foundation at 204-594-5323.

HANDOUT

Several of these stuffies were accidentally left behind and the Children’s Hospital Foundation are keeping them safe and sound while they wait for their owners to pick them up.

Two people charged after May shooting in The Pas

12:32 PM

Two people have been charged in connection with a May shooting in The Pas that left one man critically injured.

Police say four people, including a five-year-old child, were inside a vehicle when a group of suspects wearing hoodies approached and opened fire around 10 p.m. on May 27.

A 34-year-old man was shot multiple times and taken to hospital in critical condition. He survived and has since recovered. A second occupant suffered minor injuries, while the other two people in the vehicle, including the child, were not hurt.

The Manitoba Integrated Law Enforcement Team took over the investigation June 1. Investigators believe the shooting was connected to the local drug trade.

Morgan Blair, 34, was arrested at Brandon Correctional Centre and faces four counts of discharging a firearm with intent to wound, as well as charges of attempted robbery with a firearm and two firearm possession offences. Tara Kreshewski, 44, of The Pas, has been charged with attempted robbery with a firearm.

Both remain in custody. RCMP said further charges are expected as the investigation continues.
