Three teens charged after 17-year-old assaulted

3:39 PM

Three teenagers have been charged after a 17-year-old boy was seriously injured in an assault involving a machete and a firearm in Easterville.

Chemawawin RCMP were called about shots fired outside a home in the community, about 464 kilometres northwest of Winnipeg, around 4:15 a.m. Saturday. While officers were responding, they learned an injured teenager had been brought to the Easterville nursing station.

Police said the 17-year-old had been attacked by a group of five or six male youths known to him. He suffered injuries from a machete and firearm pellets and was later transported to Winnipeg in stable condition for further treatment.

Two 16-year-old boys and a 17-year-old boy were arrested and charged with aggravated assault. All three were remanded in custody.

RCMP continue to search for one remaining suspect and said there is no threat to public safety. RCMP are asking anyone with information to contact them.

St. Andrews Lock and Dam set to close Oct. 14

1:21 PM

The St. Andrews Lock and Dam will close to marine traffic for the season next month, with officials warning boat and property owners to prepare for fluctuating water levels.

Public Services and Procurement Canada said the Lockport facility will close to marine vessels at midnight Oct. 14 and remain closed until spring or summer of next year.

Following the closure, officials will begin drawing down the section of the Red River between Lockport and Winnipeg, causing water levels on the Red and Assiniboine rivers in and around Winnipeg to fluctuate.

If winter conditions arrive before the scheduled closure or the dam is placed in its winter setting, its curtains could be fully lifted with little notice, causing water levels to drop.

Owners of vessels, barges and other property along the Red and Assiniboine rivers and their tributaries are being advised to take precautions to protect their property.

Gated areas below the dam may also be closed due to turbulent water, dangerous currents, severe weather or operational requirements. Once closed, those areas will remain off-limits until spring.

Man, 36, facing multiple charges after pointing gun

12:48 PM

A 36-year-old man is facing multiple charges after allegedly pointing what appeared to be a handgun at another person near Portage Avenue and Sherbrook Street on Monday.

City police were called to the area shortly before 2 a.m. and arrested a suspect nearby without incident. Police, in a release Tuesday, said a search of the man and his belongings turned up two airsoft handguns and a butterfly knife.

Investigators believe the man had been involved in a verbal altercation with another person before the dispute escalated, and he allegedly pointed what appeared to be a handgun at them and fled. No injuries were reported.

The man faces several weapons, firearms-related and probation breach charges. He was detained in custody.

Spruce Plains RCMP nab theft suspect

12:09 PM

A 35-year-old man is facing a theft charge after Spruce Plains RCMP spotted a suspect vehicle while responding to a report of stolen tractor radiators.

RCMP were called to a farming property in the RM of Glenella-Lansdowne around 7 p.m. last Friday after two tractor radiators were reported stolen.

While heading to the property, officers spotted a vehicle travelling south on Highway 352 at a high rate of speed. Police said its licence plate matched the one provided in connection with the theft.

Officers pulled the vehicle over and arrested the driver on an unrelated warrant. The two stolen tractor radiators were found in the back of the vehicle, RCMP said.

The suspect, from the RM of North Cypress-Langford, is charged with theft under $5,000 and was also issued four tickets under the Highway Traffic Act.

His vehicle was towed, and he was released on conditions following a court appearance.
