Collisions send people to hospital; one fatality

10:42 AM

Five people are in hospital following a two-vehicle collision on Monday at the corner of Pembina Highway and Plaza Drive in which three pedestrians were struck.

On Sept. 28, just after 4:30 p.m., a Ford Fusion was travelling northbound on Pembina Highway through the Plaza Drive intersection with a green light when it was struck by a westbound Honda Fit that failed to stop for a red light at Plaza Drive. The Honda Fit mounted the sidewalk, striking three young children who were with an adult.

The three children were transported to hospital in stable condition with minor injuries. The driver of the Honda, a woman in her 70s, and the passenger, a man in his 80s, were transported to hospital in unstable condition. They were both upgraded to stable condition. The driver was issued a ticket under the Highway Traffic Act.

The Winnipeg Police Service’s Traffic Division is investigating.

Anyone with information, video surveillance, or dashcam video is asked to contact the Traffic Unit at 204-986-7085, or anonymously at Crime Stoppers 204-786-TIPS or winnipegcrimestoppers.org.

Also on Sept. 28, traffic was blocked between 4 and 7:30 p.m. following a motor-vehicle collision at Portage Avenue and Main Street.

Officers from the Traffic Division responded. A man in his 70s was transported to hospital in critical condition after his vehicle mounted a curb and struck a pole. The driver was pronounced deceased in hospital and the collision was deemed not criminal in nature.

The same day, at 5 p.m., officers from West District responded to a two-vehicle collision in the 800 block of Sterling Lyon Boulevard. A vehicle travelling eastbound on Sterling Lyon Parkway struck a westbound vehicle as it turned in front of it. The westbound vehicle then collided with a light standard, crushing its roof.

Two people were initially transported to hospital in critical condition, and then upgraded to stable condition.

Traffic lights at this intersection were affected for several hours.

Man charged after drugs, thousands of dollars seized

10:17 AM

A 24-year-old man has been charged with numerous offences following a drug trafficking investigation by Winnipeg police.

In September, the Organized Crime Unit (OCU), initiated an investigation involving an individual and a residence in the 300 block of Stradbrook Avenue.

On Sept. 22, with the assistance of the Tactical Support Team (TST) and the Central District Community Support Team, officers attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle. The driver refused to stop and fled, colliding with another vehicle. A suspect was arrested a short time later after a brief foot pursuit. No injuries were reported as a result of the motor vehicle collision.

Subsequent search warrants were executed on the suspect’s vehicle and a residence on Stradbrook. Officers seized three ounces of cocaine (estimated street value $6,000); approximately $30,000 in Canadian currency; approximately $13,000 in counterfeit currency; packaging and other illicit drug paraphernalia; a scale; a vacuum sealer; fraudulent photo ID; and three cellphones.

The suspect was released without charges pending further investigation.

On Sept. 25, OCU located the suspect in the 1100 block of Main Street and he was arrested without incident. Upon his arrest, police seized approximately $3,900 in Canadian currency and a cellphone.

A 24-year-old man is facing a number of drug-, forged-document, and driving charges. He was released on an undertaking.
