Shooting suspect arrested after nearly 4 years

4:45 PM

A suspect has been arrested in a January 2022 shooting in Winnipeg.

Nejib Abdulrished Hassan, 27, has been wanted on an arrest warrant for aggravated assault since Feb. 11, 2022. He was arrested Oct. 3, 2026 in a back lane in the 600 block of Portage Avenue. The Winnipeg Police Service tactical unit and canine unit were involved in the arrest.

Hassan is accused of shooting a man he knew in the lobby of an apartment building in the 1100 block of Portage Avenue on Jan. 31, 2022. The 30-year-old victim was stepping off the elevator when a man in the lobby shot him with a handgun. The victim had life-altering injuries, the Winnipeg Police Service stated.

Hassan is also charged with possession of an unauthorized firearm, carrying a concealed weapon and other weapons charges. Police say officers seized a handgun from Hassan during his arrest.

He was detained in custody.

The incident happened at about 8:30 a.m. Oct. 2 on Powers Street near Flora Avenue. While they were speaking with the vehicle’s occupants, police officers saw a weapon “in plain view,” the Winnipeg Police Service stated in a news release Sunday.

Officers searched the vehicle, finding a machete, plastic brass knuckles with a functioning Taser, 73 grams of fentanyl worth about $3,725 nine grams of cocaine worth about $720, 13 grams of crack cocaine worth about $1,000, prescription pills, cell phones, scales and packaging materials, and $790 in cash.

Anthony Courchene, 41, is charged with seven weapons, drug trafficking and proceeds of crime-related offences. He was also arrested on two Powerview RCMP warrants related to assault and release order compliance charges.

The 31-year-old male driver and a 33-year-old female passenger face similar charges. The female passenger also faces a charge of possession of a prohibited device, the news release stated.
