Police crack down on speeding
2:21 PM
Police ticketed seven drivers during a crackdown on careless driving and speeding between Sept. 30 and Sunday.
Four men were ticketed for speeding on Chief Peguis Trail, where the limit is 80 kilometres per hour, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Tuesday.
The men, who were all in their 20s and 30s, were clocked going 137 km/h, 136 km/h, 138 km/h and 136 km/h.
An 18-year-old man was also charged for speeding through a designated construction zone at Abinoji Mikanah and Pembina Highway on Sunday just after midnight. He was driving 99 km/h in the 60 km/h zone, police said. When he was out of the construction zone, police say he was clocked going 152 km/h in an 80 km/h zone.
That same night, two motorcyclists (in their 20s and 30) were caught speeding on Lagimodiere Boulevard around midnight, going 165 km/h and 170 km/h respectively.
In addition to being charged under the Highway Traffic Act, the drivers were also given MPI serious offence notices, which could result in further penalties, such as licence suspensions.
No charges for officers after man’s ribs broken
2:00 PM
Manitoba’s police watchdog says it will not be authorizing charges against any police officers after a man’s ribs were broken while he was being detained for impaired driving.
Earlier this year, the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) began investigating an incident that took place on Kenaston Boulevard in Winnipeg on Aug. 18, 2025.
According to the IIU, a man was driving north on Kenaston when his vehicle was rear-ended by another vehicle. The driver who had rear-ended the vehicle exited and identified himself to the driver he hit as an off-duty police officer.
The off-duty officer, realizing the other man was impaired, told him he was placing him under arrest for impaired driving. The officer physically detained the driver until on-duty officers arrived at the scene and placed him under arrest.
The next day, the male driver was found to have an acute rib fracture.
On March 6, he reported the incident to the Law Enforcement Review Agency, which notified the WPS, who then reported the incident to the IIU.
The IIU says the investigation into the matter is now closed.
IIU investigate after man hit by car during arrest
1:49 PM
Manitoba’s police watchdog is investigating after a man accused of stealing merchandise from Polo Park mall was hit by a vehicle while trying to flee police.
Two Winnipeg Police Service members were working a special duty assignment at the Portage Avenue mall when they were told a man stole merchandise from one of the stores and fled Monday afternoon.
The man ran across Portage and was hit by a vehicle travelling eastbound. He got up and made his way to a business on the opposite side of the street, where police arrested him.
He was taken to Health Sciences Centre and was diagnosed with a wrist fracture.
The WPS informed the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba of the incident shortly after 4:30 p.m. Monday. As the incident involved a serious injury during an arrest, the IIU is mandated to investigate.
Anyone with information or video footage of the incident is asked to contact the IIU toll-free at 1-844-667-6060.
