Teen, 16, charged in slaying of 15-year-old

3:27 PM

A 16-year-old teen has been charged in the killing of a 15-year-old boy after he was shot in North Point Douglas on Saturday.

Officers responded to the incident at just after 5 p.m. near Grove Street and Rex Avenue and found the 15-year-old boy with gunshot wounds, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Friday.

The boy was rushed to hospital in critical condition but later died, police said.

The victim was a member of Peguis First Nation but lived in Winnipeg.

A 16-year-old boy has been charged with second-degree murder and detained in custody.

Roads closing Sunday for WFPS Run

3:24 PM

The city is warning of several road closures on Sunday to make way for the annual WFPS Run.

In a Friday news release, the city said full closures will be in effect Sunday from 4 a.m. to noon on multiple roads.

Closures include Shaftesbury Boulevard between Corydon Avenue and Grant Avenue in both directions, and Roblin Boulevard between Shaftesbury Boulevard and William R. Clement Parkway in both directions.

Eastbound Corydon Avenue between Lamont Boulevard and Shaftesbury Boulevard will also be closed for the event Sunday, while several other roads in the Charleswood, St. James and Wolseley areas will be down to one lane from 4 a.m. to noon.

Drivers should expect delays and plan alternate routes if possible.

Nurses’ union grey-lists Seven Oaks hospital

12:38 PM

Nurses are officially being discouraged from taking shifts at Seven Oaks General Hospital owing to long-standing safety concerns.

The Manitoba Nurses Union said Friday it had officially enacted a grey-listing  — a union tactic aimed at pressing health authorities to take action in response to members’ concerns. Ninety-eight per cent of members working at Seven Oaks voted in favour of the action in June.

“Nurses are describing shifts where they simply do not have enough staff to provide the care patients need. They have raised these concerns repeatedly. They’re done with delays. They need action now,” MNU president Darlene Jackson said in a news release.

Several nurses at HSC said they did not feel safe using the hospital’s parkades and parking lots during working hours.

Seven Oaks is the fourth hospital in Manitoba to be grey-listed by nurses, joining Health Sciences Centre, St. Boniface Hospital and Thompson General Hospital.

The news release said security cameras have been repaired and security staffing has improved at Seven Oaks, but nurses say those measures do not address “ongoing workload concerns, and the additional overnight triage nurse position is limited to a one-year term with no guarantee it will continue.”

When asked to respond to another Manitoba hospital being grey-listed by the MNU, Health Minister Uzoma Asagwara said that the province has been listening to nurses and taking action.

“We’ve met with and talked directly with the MNU rep at that site,” Asagwara said when asked Friday at the federal-provincial-territorial health ministers meeting at The Leaf in Assiniboine Park.

“We have been very responsive to requests and calls for more action in terms of safety, security and staffing, and we’re going to continue to,” said the minister, who is a registered psychiatric nurse.

“For us, as a government, there’s no finish line here.  We’re going to continue to staff the front lines of the health care system all across the province as quickly as we can,” said Asagwara, pointing to nurse vacancy rates that are lower than they’ve been “in many, many years.” The minister said there’s more work to do.

“We’re not going to take our foot off the gas in terms of safety and security.  Health care needs evolve. Safety needs evolve. We have to evolve with it.”

Two arrested, one charged in McPhillips Street robbery

10:50 AM

Two suspects were arrested after a hatchet was used to smash display cases during a robbery at a business on McPhillips Street Wednesday evening.

Winnipeg police were called to the 700 block of McPhillips shortly after 8:30 p.m. after a man and woman entered a business, smashed several glass display cases and stole a significant amount of merchandise. Police said, in a release Friday, that one of the suspects was armed with a hatchet.

Both fled but two suspects were arrested without incident a short time later near Sinclair Street and Pritchard Avenue. Police recovered the stolen merchandise, along with the hatchet.

A 38-year-old man has been charged with robbery, possession of a weapon and failing to comply with a probation order. He was also wanted on outstanding warrants for breaching probation and release orders.

Police continue to investigate.

Teen charged in taxi driver stabbing

10:23 AM

Winnipeg police have charged a 16-year-old in the stabbing of a taxi driver last month.

Officers were called to the 1600 block of Regent Avenue around 9 p.m. Sept. 25 after a cab driver was stabbed following an argument.

Investigators say the teen boy was a passenger in the cab when the argument broke out and the driver was stabbed. The suspect fled and the driver went to hospital on his own and was treated for serious upper-body injuries.

The teen has been charged with assault with a weapon and failing to comply with a sentence. He remains in custody.

Police look to identify persons of interest in arson probe

10:22 AM

Winnipeg Police Service detectives are asking the public to help identify two persons of interest in a North Point Douglas arson investigation.

The fire in a one-and-a-half-storey house in the 0-100 block of Granville Street early on Sept. 28 sent one person to hospital.

On Friday, police put out a photograph of two people, who appear to be youths or young adults, wanted in connection with the fire investigation.

Firefighters raced to the blaze at around 6 a.m. that day and found bystanders trying to rescue the resident from the home, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service said previously.

Firefighters were able to pull the person through a window, who was taken to hospital in stable condition. A bystander was treated at the scene for a minor injury.

Police ask anyone with information, or potentially relevant dash-cam, security or cellphone video from around the time of the incident, to call major crimes detectives at 204-986-2426 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 204-786-8477.
