Opinion

Hey there, time traveller!
This article was published 07/07/2011 (5433 days ago), so information in it may no longer be current.

Part two of quotes from some more great Winnipeggers of note on what it is about summer in Winnipeg means to them. These are awesome. Thanks again for all the submissions so far. Keep ’em coming. I’ll once again leave my remarks underneath their quotes.

Kenny Boyce

“In Toronto if you go downtown for the day and forget to bring your wallet or purse, either someone buys you lunch or you go without lunch. In Winnipeg, I can go home for lunch. Its an easy city to move around. It a great place to be. There’s never been a better time to live in Winnipeg! This is our time.”

Great angle from Kenny. I know Kenny well and know what he thinks of our city, so when he says it’s a great place to be… he means it.

Ron Cantiveros

“The thing I love about Manitoba summers are all the picnics in the park. it’s outdoors, it’s fresh foods, it’s home cooked meals.”

Ron should also have pointed out his love of patios, as this, and all quotes from Ron are sent from his phone while on a patio.

Earl Barish

“A Sals Nip at the Forks Sals on the Bridge, as the entire view makes me feel like I am in Europe. Actually a Sals Nip at any Sals location is great. Also, purchasing an ice cream from a 3-wheeled vending bicycle in Kildonan Park brings back some of the joys of my north end days!”

Earl is awesome. And I will agree with him about Nips in general. Nips at Sals on the Bridge come with an excellent view… but a Nip at any Sals, any day, will do nicely.

Hartley Richardson

“Personally I like the long warm summer nights with a light breeze, burgers on the BBQ, an ice cold beer in my hand, and Phil Collins on the stereo – now that’s the perfect evening!”

I can actually picture Hartley doing this. He’s the coolest. Perhaps even cooler than Phil Collins, who is all kinds of cool.

Gord Steeves

“No question. Best thing about Manitoba summer is sitting on the patio, having a few beers at the Dakota Hotel Bar at the junction of St. Mary’s and Dunkirk with your buddies, arguing about who had the best mullets in St. Vital when you graduated from high school. That is definitely the best part of a Manitoba summer, I’d highly recommend it to anybody out there.”

Gord left his quote on my voicemail, in typical Gord Steeves deadpan. If you think he’s making this stuff up, then you don’t know Gord Steeves. He’s a classic.

Darcy Oake

“Teaching the lambada (the forbidden dance) at seniors’ homes around Winnipeg and nude pole vaulting at Assiniboine park at midnight – it’s a family tradition.”

If it’s a family tradition, then that means Scott Oake would be there, which is all kinds of awesome.
