Hey there, time traveller!

We’re on week two of our major kitchen renovation and finding things around the house has been challenging to say the least.

I thought I had an ingenious system of using our dining room as a make-shift pantry during the giant upheaval, until my two kids and the dog decided to crash my party. How inviting for them all to have everything that was once stored high and out of reach conveniently arranged at eye level for the taking.

So the list of missing objects has been growing exponentially and with, what appears to be, no end in sight.

On the bright side, “Mommy’s Kitchen” (which is what my husband and kids are now calling it) is turning out to be everything I dreamed it would be and I’m starting to feel like we really do belong in this home we moved into almost a year and a half ago.

Those of us with young children know that you’ve never really lived somewhere until you start recognizing the wear and tear that your own family has contributed to the space. Today I was picking craft glue off of our kitchen table, yesterday I was washing freshly painted handprints off of our family room wall (please, please only ever buy the “yellow” washable paint brand – while other brands say their paints/crayons/markers are “washable”, I’ve found this term is tossed around very loosely in the craft industry. Just pay the extra 40 cents and don’t question your decision).

Anyhoo, it’s been one of those weeks and I’m going to turn in for the night and dream of garborators being installed (we’re replacing an old one with a newer model that requires you to firmly close the top before it starts slicing and dicing. Now I won’t have to use the fish tank to camouflage “the switch” we never use in the children’s presence), finding lost car keys and wallets, writing more cheques and making a great big old snow man in our front yard.

November is that kind of month when the snow brings with it a sense of being settled and the need to wrap up in a cozy blanket. Having said that, make some time everyone to bundle up and get outside with the kids to frolic in the white fluffy stuff. I must say there is nothing more humbling after paying a stack of renovation bills than watching rosy faced children making free angels in the snow…
